> Colophon to the Blood-Written Lotus Sutra

> All words of the Buddha are the eyes of all beings and the lifeblood of countless sages—how much more so the supreme and wondrous Dharma? All recitation, contemplation, and practice of it are the true seeds of wisdom (Prajñā) and the raft that ferries us across suffering—how much more so using one’s own blood as ink? Those who practice a hollow Zen discuss lofty doctrines and principles, unaware of genuine practice; they have simply not yet realized the truth. If one truly awakens to the principle, then every single act is nothing other than the wondrous principle itself. How then could we disdain concrete phenomena and exalt abstract principle alone? Moreover, sentient beings, since beginnings time, have been deeply attached to the self. Both the meditative and doctrinal paths urgently confront this attachment, and this very practice (offering blood as ink) is the perfect means to gradually develop into the vast practices of three great eons, so that both the primary afflictions and their habitual traces are completely eradicated. This is truly realizing the principle within the phenomenon, the Sudden within the Gradual. How then could we abandon this genuine practice and mistake empty talk for wondrous enlightenment? My Dharma friend Rǔ Shēng, \[乳生\] who has long cultivated correct faith, performed this inconceivable merit just when he came of age for Dharma practice. For this reason, he has studied with many teachers and remains untainted by the recent sickness of Chan. In the future, when he personally witnesses the assembly on Vulture Peak, he will realize that even the blood and ink forming the characters are entirely the Lotus Samādhi (法華三昧) itself; the formless and peaceful practice is truly not separate from its form-based counterpart.
