> Colophon to the Lotus Sutra by Daquan

> This sutra is called the \*\*Great Equal Wisdom\*\*, and is also known as the \*\*King of All Sutras\*\*. If wisdom is equal, then the Dharma is also equal—so why is it uniquely called the "King"? Although the Dharma is equal, sentient beings, being confused, mistakenly perceive differences. Therefore, the Buddha's entire teachings skillfully adapt to the wandering delusions of beings, creating distinctions within what is originally without distinction. Only at Vulture Peak was the ultimate teaching proclaimed, making clear that distinctions are fundamentally non-existent. That all dharmas are transformed into the Buddha-Dharma is entirely due to the power of the \*Lotus Sutra\*. Looking back, the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* was mixed, the \*Agamas\* were limited, the \*Vaipulya\* sutras were comparative, and the \*Prajñā\* sutras provisional—none can compare with it. Moreover, this sutra directly reveals the Buddha's fundamental gate, benefiting beings throughout the three periods of time: sowing seeds again and again, ripening them again and again, and liberating them again and again. Before, it does not begin with Great Penetration or the Victorious Sound; after, it is not exhausted by the exhaustion of firewood or the burning out of embers. All of the Tathāgata's vertical and horizontal transformative power, the essential framework of his teaching network, is thoroughly revealed with nothing left hidden. Thus, encountering it is rarer than the udumbara flower, and the merit of upholding it equals the Dharma Realm itself. But the wonder of the Buddha-Dharma and the wonder of sentient beings are inseparable from the wonder of the mind-Dharma. The wonderful mind of a single present thought—this is called the lotus flower. Awaken to the mind-lotus, and all dharmas are nothing but the lotus. The mind is the King of Sutras; the mind is the Great Equal Wisdom. Penetrating this true meaning is what qualifies one as understanding the provisional. Strive for it!
