### 妙玄節要自跋

> Colophon to the Essential Summary of the Profound and Mysterious

一字法門，海墨不盡，九句譚妙，奚足云多。且九旬四辯，文義何限，章安所記略矣。乃末世鈍根，猶畏其繁，望《妙玄》而如海，甘蛙守以不前，無上醍醐，罔沾一滴，可痛也。竊聞《大智度》千卷，羅什十倍略之，《摩訶止觀》全書，荊溪錄其大意，因倣厥旨，輯為《妙玄節要》，凡二卷。庶幾一臠染指，漸充法味，然後遍討玄文，深證法華三昧。斯舉也，未必非循循善誘之一術也。若僅守節要，終置全珍，予固智者、章安之罪人，而彼又予之罪人矣。

> The one-word Dharma gate cannot be fully expressed even with all the ink in the ocean, and nine sentences of profound discourse are far from excessive. During the ninety-day teaching of the Four Doctrines, the texts and meanings were boundless—what Master Zhang’an recorded was merely an abridgment. Yet in this degenerate age, even dull-willed beings still find it too complex, gazing at the \*Miaofa Xuan Yi\* as if at a vast sea, content to remain like frogs in a well without moving forward, never tasting even a single drop of the supreme nectar of truth. How regrettable this is! I have heard that the \*Great Prajñāpāramitā Śāstra\* originally comprised a thousand scrolls, but Kumārajīva condensed it to about one-tenth. Similarly, the complete \*Mahāśamatha-vipaśyanā\* was summarized in its essentials by Master Jingxi. Following this approach, I have compiled the \*Epitome of the Miaofa Xuan Yi\* in two volumes. My hope is that readers may gain a first taste of this sublime Dharma, gradually develop a deeper thirst for it, and then go on to thoroughly study the complete texts, attaining profound realization of the Samādhi of the Lotus Sutra. If this work serves as a gradual and skillful means of guidance, then it has fulfilled its purpose. But if anyone stops at this epitome alone, putting aside the full treasure, then I would be a traitor to Masters Zhiyi and Zhang’an, and such a person would be a traitor to me as well.
