> Colophon to the Buddha-Crown Sutra by Lotus Islet

> The sutra says: "If someone, with a single thought, dedicates this Dharma-door to instruct the unlearned during the final age, their karmic obstacles will vanish in that very thought, and the hellish suffering they would endure will transform into a land of peace and bliss." Yet a single thought is so subtle—how can it possess such great power? You must understand that the nature of a single thought fundamentally pervades all time and space. Every phenomenon, every principle, every inherent quality and appearance, never exists outside this present, single thought. Therefore, when a single thought is deluded, birth-and-death stretches on endlessly; when a single thought awakens, the cycle of rebirth ceases instantly. Consider this: in your daily life, who is it that gives rise to confusion and creates karma? And now, who is it that copies sutras and performs repentance? Does this thought of creating karma or repenting reside inside, outside, or in between? Is it blue, yellow, red, white, long, short, square, or round? Does it belong to the past, present, or future? If you truly search for it and find nothing at all to grasp, then both guilt and merit have no owner. This is genuine repentance. This is why Ananda instantly attained the nature of the Dharmakaya, and why the nun became an arhat. But if, within what is ungraspable, you mistakenly think there is a mind to be grasped, then you will commit offenses and repent, repent and commit again—like recurring malaria that never ends. Nevertheless, the karmic seeds of the Mahayana are inconceivable. Even if you force yourself to practice diligently, your effort is never wasted. The virtuous roots of transcendence gradually grow stronger, while the leaking seeds of the mundane world gradually diminish. Just as light dispels darkness, this process is absolutely certain and never deceives.
