> Strange Records of Spirits

> Confucius did not discuss strange forces, chaotic forces, or supernatural beings. Strangeness and supernatural power themselves are not non-existent. Ordinary people are bound by their daily experiences and habits. When something happens that breaks their usual patterns, they call it strange. But consider this: right now, in this very body, how do the eyes and ears see and hear? How do the mouth and feet taste and speak, stop and walk? Are these not the most extraordinary things of all? The Buddha realized the profound nature of mind and reality. He was not confined by habitual patterns, so why should we consider his realization mysterious? When ordinary people witness this, they find it completely astonishing. To say the Buddha is miraculous is to misunderstand that the mind’s fundamental nature is inherently wondrous. To be completely unaware of the Buddha’s miraculous manifestations—to neither see nor hear, nor notice nor know them—that is even worse, like a frog at the bottom of a well or an insect that lives only in summer. Nevertheless, are not the frog and the summer insect themselves miracles? Because the nature of miraculousness is originally equal in all beings, it can still awaken us to its presence. To awaken to this miraculous nature, and then to awaken to the fact that it is not essentially miraculous—that is the point at which we can discuss the teaching that is beyond words.
