> Inscription on the Ox-Herding Pictures

牧牛喻修證，本諸經論，非創談也。然畢竟牛是何物？牧者何人？普禪為頌，雲棲鋟圖，菂中法友又繪成卷，予更下一註腳，如牛入窗櫺，頭蹄都過了，卻有尾巴過不得。且道此尾白邪，黑邪？有邪，無邪？會得者箇俏息，不妨雲邊月外與汝相見。

> The parable of herding the ox is a reference to spiritual cultivation found in the sutras and shastras; it is not an original invention. But after all—what is the ox? And who is the herder? Master Puchan composed verses on it, Master Yunqi engraved illustrations, and the Dharma friend from Dizhong has further painted a scroll. Now I will add one more footnote: The ox has already passed through the window lattice—head and hooves both through—but its tail remains stuck. Now tell me: Is that tail white? Black? Existing? Or not existing? If you can grasp this subtle point, then we may meet beyond the clouds and the moon.
