### 重刻三頌自跋

> Postscript to the Reprint of Three Verses

不信教外別傳，是謗宗也；謂教外果有別傳，是謗教也。抑不信教外別傳，是謗教也；謂教外果有別傳，是謗宗也。捨此二塗，作何折合？不見道：恁麼也不得，不恁麼也不得，恁麼不恁麼總不得。又道：恁麼也得，不恁麼也得，恁麼不恁麼總得。雖然，毫釐差，天地隔。山納甘墮無閒，漫作三頌，未審教外邪，教內邪？別傳邪，非別傳邪？儻遇無眼人觀、無耳人聽，必有能辨之者。

> To refuse to believe in the transmission outside the scriptures is to slander the school of Chan. To claim that there truly is a transmission outside the scriptures is to slander the school of the teachings. On the other hand, to refuse to believe in the transmission outside the scriptures is also to slander the school of the teachings. To claim that there truly is a transmission outside the scriptures is also to slander the school of Chan. Leaving these two extremes, how can we settle the matter? Have you not heard it said? "Neither this way nor that way will do, nor even both ways together." And again: "This way works, that way works, and both ways together work as well." Yet still, a hair's breadth of difference separates heaven and earth. I, the mountain monk, willingly fall into endless suffering and have casually composed three verses. But I ask you: Are they within the teachings or outside the teachings? Is it a separate transmission or not? Should we ever encounter someone with no eyes to see or no ears to hear, surely they would be the ones to discern the truth.
