### 彌陀要解自跋

> Postscript to the Essential Explanation of Amitabha

經云「末世億億人修行，罕一得道，唯依念佛得度。」嗚呼！今其時矣。捨此不可思議法門，其何能淑？旭初出家，亦負宗乘而藐教典，妄謂持名，曲為中下。後因大病，發意西歸。嗣研《妙宗》、《圓中》二鈔，始知念佛三昧無上寶王，方肯死心執持名號，萬牛莫挽也。吾友去病，欲令此經大旨，辭不繁而炳著。予方願普與有情，同生極樂，不可辭。舉筆於丁亥九月二十有七日，脫稿於十月初五日。所願一句一字，咸作資糧，一見一聞，同階不退。信疑皆植道種，讚謗等歸解脫。仰唯諸佛菩薩攝受證明，同學友人隨喜加被。

> The sutra says: "In the final age, among billions of practitioners, rare is the one who attains the Way. Only by relying on mindfulness of the Buddha can they cross over." Alas! That time has now arrived. If we abandon this inconceivable Dharma gate, what else could possibly save us? When I first left home, I too valued the Chan school and looked down on the scriptural teachings, arrogantly thinking that reciting the Buddha's name was merely a provision for those of lesser capacity. Later, due to a severe illness, I set my mind on rebirth in the Western Pure Land. After studying the commentaries \*Miaozong Chao\* and \*Yuanzhong Chao\*, I realized that the Samadhi of Mindfulness of the Buddha is the unsurpassed sovereign gem of the Dharma. Only then was I willing to earnestly hold to the Name with my whole being, so firmly that ten thousand oxen could not pull me back. My friend Qubing wishes to make the essential meaning of this sutra clear without superfluous words. As I too aspire that all sentient beings be reborn together in the Land of Ultimate Bliss, I could not refuse. I began writing on the twenty-seventh day of the ninth month in the year Dinghai, and completed the draft on the fifth day of the tenth month. My hope is that every word and phrase may serve as provision for the journey, that each seeing and hearing may lead to the stage of non-retrogression. Whether one believes or doubts, seeds of the Way are planted; whether one praises or slanders, all equally lead to liberation. Humbly, I rely on the compassionate guidance and witness of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and rejoice with fellow practitioners in their support and blessings.
