### 周易禪解自跋

> Colophon to the Chan Interpretation of the Zhouyi

曩遊溫陵，有郭氏問《易》，遂舉筆屬稿，先五傳，次上經，而下經解未及半，以應請旋置。今商大乘止觀之餘，拈示易學，始竟前稿。嗟嗟！從閩至吳，地不過三千餘里，從辛巳冬至今乙酉夏，時不過千二百餘日，乃世事幻夢，萬別千差，交易邪，變易邪？至歷盡差別，時地俱易，而不易者，依然如故。吾是以知，日月稽天而不歷，江河競注而不流，肇公非欺我也。得其不易，以應其至易，觀其至易，以驗其不易，常與無常，二鳥雙遊。吾安知文王之羑里，周公之被流言，孔子息機於周流，而韋編三絕，不同感於斯邪？因閣筆，復為之跋。

> Once, when traveling in Wenling, I was asked by a Mr. Guo about the \*Book of Changes\*. Setting pen to paper, I first wrote the Five Commentaries, then the Upper Canon—but before even half the Lower Canon was complete, I set it aside to attend to other requests. Now, amid my studies of Mahāyāna \*śamatha-vipaśyanā\*, I came across a pointer on the study of the \*Changes\*, and finally completed that earlier draft. Alas! From Fujian to Wu, the distance is no more than three thousand \*li\*; from the winter of 1641 to the summer of 1645, the time is no more than twelve hundred days. Yet worldly affairs are like illusions and dreams—ten thousand differences, a thousand distinctions. Are they transformations? Are they changes? Having experienced all these differences, both time and place have changed—yet what does not change remains just as before. Thus I know that the sun and moon hang in the sky without traveling, and rivers rush onward yet do not flow. Venerable Sengzhao did not deceive me. Grasp that which does not change, and respond to that which constantly changes. Observe that which constantly changes, and verify that which does not change. The eternal and the impermanent—like two birds flying together. How could I not realize that King Wen, imprisoned at Youli; the Duke of Zhou, slandered by rumors; and Confucius, wandering in vain, his leather bindings worn thin—all felt the same truth? So I put down my pen and added this colophon.
