> Preface to Giving Alms to Support Mother

> On an autumn day in 2008, a compassionate Dharma friend asked me to rewrite the preface I had written before. Reflecting on myself, I was overcome with deep remorse and tears. As a child, I resolved to care for my parents. At twenty, I lost my father—an endless sorrow. At twenty-four, I left home to become a monk, abandoning my mother without support. My aim was to attain enlightenment quickly to repay my parents' kindness. Unexpectedly, when I was twenty-eight, my mother also passed away. The grief was overwhelming, tearing my heart apart. Yet I still said: "I will venture into the deep mountains, hoping to achieve something that might redeem my immense sins." By thirty-one, I was drawn by fellow practitioners and gradually entangled in the web of fame, causing my resolve for hidden cultivation and inner realization to weaken further. Now, at fifty, my parents have been gone for thirty years. Unlike Maudgalyayana, who attained his own realization, I often think of building a pure altar, inviting ten friends to practice the Pure Land repentance. Yet my bowl and alms bag are empty—I am poor at begging. Often, in the middle of the night, I toss and turn, weeping in grief. But Compassion Relief, with a single bowl from a thousand homes, brings joy right before our eyes—truly an inconceivable happiness. Kind-hearted monastics and laypeople, providing grains of rice and stalks of firewood to support filial piety—truly an inconceivable blessing. I lack this blessing, so I lack this joy. Past karma is heavy—what more is there to say? With reverence, I deeply rejoice in this blessing and this joy. Through this joy and its roots of goodness, I dedicate it to all beings in the Dharma realm, that they may share this same blessing and joy. Until, through countless lifetimes repaying the kindness of parents, accumulating causes and attaining enlightenment, we forever escape the suffering of being unfilial, without blessing or joy. Wiping away my tears, I rewrite this.
