> Master Han's Afterword to Tang Dynasty Teacher Xiuya's "Song of Listening to the Lotus Sutra"

> How wondrous is the mind! The Buddhas of the three times attain enlightenment through it; the twelve kinds of beings revolve in samsara because of it; mountains, rivers, sun, and moon appear as illusions due to it; words and sounds manifest through it. The mind cannot be described in words, yet words are never apart from the mind. Each word necessarily involves the complete essence and function of the mind. Yet even through endless eons, with immeasurable words, one could never fully express the subtle wonder of a single moment of thought. Every person possesses this wondrous mind. Through the Śākyamuni Buddha’s sublime Lotus Sūtra, we may find its commentary. Through the Lotus Sūtra, we have the Dharma Master Xiu’s marvelous song of listening. The song’s exquisite words are somewhat praised, and through our Honored Old Man Han’s masterful calligraphy, we have what may be called a double treasure. Those in the world who do not recognize the wonder of their own mind, the wonder of the Lotus Sūtra, or the wonder of this song—if they simply treasure Honored Han’s calligraphy and contemplate it day and night, who knows if they might not come to know the song through the letters, then know the scripture through the song, and finally awaken to the mind through the scripture? Thus, the wondrous characters, the wondrous song, and the wondrous scripture all flow from the wondrous mind and all return to it. Who says that the mind contains anything outside itself, or that anything outside the mind exists independently?
