> Appendix to the Ten Hindrances<note place="inline">The Ten Hindrances are from the \*Precious King Samadhi\* and \*Direct Pointers to Mindfulness of the Buddha\*.</note>

> No Buddha, sage, or holy being ever failed to use adversity as a great forge for their cultivation. Among the Buddha's Four Noble Truths, the Truth of Suffering comes first. He also referred to the eight kinds of suffering as eight teachers. If we harbor even a trace of liking comfort and disliking hardship, we will end up rotting like summer grass—how could we ever stand tall like pine and cypress amidst frost and snow? Uncut jade is not polished into a gem; unrefined gold is not purified into something precious; a bell not struck makes no sound; a knife not sharpened becomes dull. How could there be a naturally born Maitreya or an effortless Shakyamuni? To become a sage, a holy being, or a Buddha, you must accept harsh criticism like sweet nectar, and encounter hardship and opposition like finding a priceless treasure. Only then can you truly "practice the Way amidst difficulty." Only then can you plant the seeds of Enlightenment in this impure world. Only then can you, like a lotus blooming from the mud, climb to the state of non-retrogression. If in peaceful times you just talk about reciting the Buddha's name and seeking rebirth in the Pure Land, but as soon as you encounter something unpleasant you become regretful, angry, and complaining, I fear your meditative concentration will never be achieved, and rebirth in the West will not be certain. You must test yourself against these Ten Great Obstructions. If, when sick, in difficulty, or even when unjustly oppressed, you only increase your mindfulness of the Buddha and clearly see the emptiness of suffering, without blaming or resenting anyone, then your lotus flower will grow daily, and you can be called a king of the Samadhi treasure.
