> Postscript to the Essential Meaning of the Lotus Sutra

> Alas! The profound and perfect Dharma of the Sudden Teaching is rarely encountered, even across countless aeons. I, dull and ignorant, by what good fortune have I met it? Each time I open and read it, it feels as though I have heard it before. Is this not the power of Samantabhadra and the protection of Shakyamuni? The wise master Zhiyi is no longer with us. Later scholars, clinging stubbornly to their views, have given rise to disputes and conflicts. The Dharma gate of perfect harmony and transcendence has nearly become a battleground for right and wrong personal opinions. Those who propagate it raise walls ever higher and deeper; those who look upon it grow daily more doubtful, fearful, and alienated. Witnessing this with my own eyes, I feel deeply distressed. Despite my own inadequacies, I have taken up the task of offering a brief introduction. I began writing on the fifth day of the eleventh lunar month in the year Jichou. Upon finishing just one preface, I lay ill in bed for half a month. By the nineteenth day, I finally managed to proceed with effort. Day and night I toiled—hands never stopping, eyes never resting. By the twenty-sixth day of the twelfth lunar month, I had only completed eight volumes of the \*Commentary\*. I rested for three days. On New Year's Day in the year Gengyin, I continued writing. After another month, I finished the work. In total, the \*Commentary\* runs sixteen volumes, requiring sixty-eight days of focused effort. Alas! In ancient times, a single stick of incense could suffice for a full recitation of the \*Avatamsaka Sutra\*. I, Xu, am dull, laboring so arduously—how laughable! Yet this is to guide beginners, allowing them to gradually awaken to the true reality of the Lotus Sutra—neither grasping at swords in ignorance nor drowning in despair. Then may Shakyamuni, Samantabhadra, and the wise Zhiyi take compassion on Xu’s clumsiness and further recognize the sincerity of his devotion.
