### 占察疏自跋

> Colophon to the Divination Sutra Commentary

憶辛未冬，寓北天目，有溫陵徐雨海，法名弘鎧，說此《占察》妙典。予特遣人往雲棲請得，展讀之，悲欣交集。癸酉冬，依經立懺。乙亥夏，講演分科。是時即有作疏之願，病冗交沓，屈指十五年來，《梵網》、《佛頂》、《唯識》、《法華》皆已註釋，獨此夙願尚未填還，可歎也。今庚寅年，閱世已五十二歲，百念灰盡，偶同志數人，仍來結夏北天目，究心毘尼。予念末世，欲得淨戒，捨《占察》輪相之法，更無別塗。爰命筆於六月朔，越十四日成稿。輸一滴以益大海，捧一塵以培須彌，雖無補於高深，庶善鑽於乳酪，公我同志，共享醍醐。

> Recall in the winter of 1631, while residing at North Tianmu Mountain, a man from Wenling named Xu Yuhai, who had taken the Dharma name Hongkai, spoke of this wonderful text, the \*Sutra of Divination\*. I specially sent someone to the Yunqi Monastery to request a copy. When I unrolled it and read it, I was filled with both sorrow and joy. In the winter of 1633, I established a repentance ritual based on the sutra. In the summer of 1635, I gave a lecture and divided it into sections. At that time, I already had the wish to write a commentary on it. However, hampered by illness and a heap of tasks, fifteen years have passed in the blink of an eye. I have already written commentaries on the \*Brahma Net Sutra\*, \*The Sutra of the Heroic March\*, the \*Treatise on Consciousness-Only\*, and the \*Lotus Sutra\*, but this long-cherished wish remains unfulfilled. How lamentable! Now, in the year 1650, I am already fifty-two years old. A hundred hopes have turned to ashes. By chance, a few like-minded companions came once again to North Tianmu for our summer retreat, devoted to studying the monastic code. I realized that in these degenerate times, if one wishes to obtain pure precepts, there is no other path than the method of the divination board from the \*Sutra of Divination\*. Thus, I took up my brush on the first day of the sixth lunar month, and completed the manuscript fourteen days later. May this work be like offering a single drop to expand the great ocean, or placing a single speck of dust to help build Mount Sumeru. Though it can hardly add to their height or depth, it may serve as a starting point, like churning milk to produce fine cream. I offer it openly to all my companions, that we may together share the finest nectar.
