> Colophon to Layman Wu Danian's Calligraphy of the Lotus Sutra

> The Treasury of the Lotus Sutra is profound, deep, hidden, and far-reaching, beyond anyone’s reach. Yet it is not that it cannot be reached. It is simply that within the state of "no one," people mistakenly cling to the idea of a "someone," and so they walk all day long without realizing it. If one understands that all phenomena are without self, without a being, without a life span, and without a person — that there is no appearance of phenomena, nor even no-appearance — then every speck of dust, every realm, all ten directions and three times, past and present, become one single wondrous scripture. When a child of the Buddha dwells in this place, they are already abiding in the Buddha’s own enjoyment. Whether walking, sitting, or lying down within it, how could there be any distinction between "able to reach" and "not able to reach"? On Vulture Peak, the Buddha deeply praised even a single thought of faith and understanding, as well as the merit of reciting, upholding, and copying the sutra. These were not empty words. Layman Danian copied the wondrous scripture three times, and his grandson Canru cherished and enshrined it. The Way Master Ouyi opened and examined it with joy. Has he reached it? Has he not reached it? Better not to speculate.
