### 刺血書華嚴經疏

> Writing the Flower Garland Sutra in Blood

予讀《華嚴》，至善財見普賢一毛孔中，悉有微塵數佛剎海會，圍繞遊歷，經微塵劫，終無有盡，抑何身相之不思議也。及普賢自述願王，則云「剝皮為紙，刺血為墨，以髓為水，析骨為筆，書寫經卷，積如須彌。」故知非殊勝大行，無以嚴毘盧法界；非一乘妙法，無以圓廣大願王。苟於一乘妙法，深心信解，依解起行，當知華藏莊嚴，豈唯在普賢一毛孔中明見，亦即於吾人介爾心內薦取。此月心開士，所以矢志刺血書寫也。八十一卷，可八月奏成。於中若紙筆、若香、若莊嚴成就、若飲食供饌，須十三金，表此世界，適當第十三重也。每金作十緣，表十界也。每緣作十分，表十願也。一一願咸攝十界，一一界總周剎海，俾施者受者，互融於帝網光明；而若法若財，交映於雜華瓔珞。

> When I read the Avatamsaka Sutra and came to the passage where Sudhana sees that within a single pore of Samantabhadra’s body there are countless lands filled with oceanic assemblies, traveling through eons without end—how inconceivable is that sacred form! And when Samantabhadra himself recounts his vows, he says: "I peel off my skin as paper, draw blood as ink, use marrow as water, break my bones as brushes, and write down the scriptures. The scrolls pile up as high as Mount Sumeru." From this we know: without this supreme practice, one cannot adorn the Dharma Realm of Vairocana; without the One Vehicle’s wondrous teaching, one cannot perfect the vast King of Vows. If one deeply believes and understands this One Vehicle teaching, and then puts that understanding into practice, one should realize that the glory of the Lotus Treasury World appears not only distinctly within a single pore of Samantabhadra—it is also accessible right here in each tiny moment of our own minds. This is why the enlightened practitioner Yuexin resolved to write out the sutras with his own blood. Eighty-one scrolls could be completed in about eight months. For the materials—paper, brushes, incense, adornments, and offerings of food—a cost of thirteen pieces of gold was needed, signifying that this world is rightfully the thirteenth level. Each piece of gold is divided into ten causes, symbolizing the Ten Realms. Each cause is split into ten parts, symbolizing the Ten Vows. Every single vow encompasses all Ten Realms, and each realm pervades the ocean of worlds. May donors and recipients merge within the radiant web of Indra’s net, and may both the Dharma and material offerings reflect each other within the garlands of variegated flowers and jeweled necklaces.
