### 永慶寺平治道塗疏

> Repairing the Roads at Yongqing Temple

持地菩薩平地待佛，佛摩頂謂之曰：「善男子！當平心地，則世界自平。」此為事度人，示唯心法門，令因事入理也。唯茲事理二塗，混不類，分不開。以平地之法平心，一切唯心；以平心之法平地，一切唯地。唯心雖妙，猶待於麤；唯地之妙，始稱絕待。且如永慶山前一條大路，本來坦坦，何須更平？然高下之見未忘，斯平治之功可效。功雖有作，行實無為。行積於無量劫波，心開於一言摩頂。因該果徹，唯是一乘。儻離地談心，心復烏有？畫空作繪，非圓頓乘。是役也，一磚一礫，同證究竟寂光；一兩一銖，悉入首楞三昧。

> The Bodhisattva Who Holds the Earth (持地菩薩) leveled the ground and awaited the Buddha. The Buddha touched the Bodhisattva’s crown and said to him: “Good man! When you level the ground of your mind, the world will naturally be level.” This was a teaching for those who seek awakening through practical deeds, revealing the doctrine of the mind-only approach, guiding people to enter the principle through concrete actions. Now, these two paths—principle and practice—are both mixed and inseparable. If you use the method of leveling ground to level the mind, then everything is mind-only. If you use the method of leveling the mind to level the ground, then everything is earth-only. The mind-only teaching, though profound, still depends on something coarser; the earth-only teaching is so subtle that it is truly independent. Consider the broad road in front of Evergreen Mountain (永慶山). It is already smooth and level. Why would it need further leveling? Yet if we still harbor thoughts of high and low, the work of leveling can indeed be of use. Though the work involves effort, the practice itself is effortless. Actions accumulate over countless eons, and the mind opens with a single touch of the Buddha’s hand on the crown. The cause encompasses the result, and the result penetrates the cause—this is the One Vehicle alone. If we speak of mind apart from earth, where is there a mind? To draw pictures in empty space is not the practice of the Perfect and Sudden Vehicle. In this undertaking, every brick and every stone equally realizes the ultimate realm of still light; every coin and every weight of material enters the Samadhi of the Heroic March (首楞三昧).
