> Lingyan Temple's Request for Sutra Collection

> All Tathāgatas expound the Dharma provisionally through the inexpressible path. All Bodhisattvas, through the samadhi of words, awaken to the speechless truth. The empty nature of verbal expression is true liberation. To seek truth apart from words is to fall into dark, deluded meditation — not the true treasury of the correct Dharma. I originally abandoned Confucianism to study Buddhism, and mistakenly believed that the single-path tradition lay outside the scriptures. I spent all my time simply sitting on meditation cushions, shelving all sutras and treatises. Later, I met elder masters like Zhenji and Boshan, and reflecting on the gains and losses of past and present, I realized that the Zen sickness of these latter days stems precisely from lack of knowledge and understanding — not from excessive learning and hearing. This is the opposite of the affliction of scholars from the Tang and Song dynasties. "To interpret the meaning by clinging to words cheats the Buddhas of past, present, and future. To deviate a single word from the sutras is to speak like a demon." The words of the wise masters truly do not deceive me. "Learning without thinking leads to confusion; thinking without learning leads to danger." I came to believe this Confucian maxim even more deeply. Thus I resolved to read through the entire Tripitaka, gathering all medicines to heal myself and others. I intended first to comment on the \*Brahma Net Sutra\*, to present the essential principles of the Vinaya. I cast lots before the Buddha to determine where I should settle. Among nine lots, only the Hundred Blessings Monastery at Lingyan Mountain on Lingfeng Peak was chosen. My plan was to write the commentary here for one year, then move on to complete my initial vow of reading the canon. A novice named Liuju Zhou donated funds to sponsor a complete Tripitaka and urged me to stay longer. Dharma Master Xuehang gathered support from the community, turning this land without the Buddha's teaching into a place of great transformation. The demons of error and confusion were simultaneously dispelled; the Buddha seal and the Confucian tradition stood together like reeds leaning on a tree. Faithful monks and laypeople — who would not rejoice in this?
