### 蘊空精舍募建華嚴閣疏

> Essay on Fundraising for the Avatamsaka Pavilion at the Pure Land of Empty Skandhas

> The Dharma current spread to China, bringing a vast treasury of sutras. None is as extensive as the \*Avatamsaka\*, and none as concise as the \*Heart Sutra\*. Yet both, in their teachings, embrace the expansive and the succinct. When the \*Heart Sutra\* says, "He clearly saw that all five aggregates are empty," everyone knows this phrase, but few ask: With what does one see? If one sees with distorted wisdom, they take emptiness to mean nothing after death. If one sees with the wisdom of a hearer \[a \*shravaka\*\], then emptiness means that upon analyzing the six elements, no self can be found. If one sees with the wisdom of dependent origination, then emptiness means that all entities are devoid of intrinsic nature, like illusions or dreams. If one sees with the wisdom exclusive to bodhisattvas, then emptiness means that both extremes cannot be grasped, transcending all faults. But only when one sees with profound prajna wisdom does it mean that all conditioned dharmas are themselves the Dharma Realm, free of the finest dust, measureless in all dimensions, perfectly and inclusively present, without obstacle—this is true emptiness. Cultivating this contemplation, one realizes that every dharma follows the mind: this is named "The One Who Contemplates with Ease" \[Guanyin\]. Every particle is fully complete: this is called "Universal Virtue" \[Samantabhadra\]. Profound wisdom penetrates without obstruction: this is called "Gentle Splendor" \[Manjushri\]. Great compassion universally covers all: this is called "Maitreya." The Dharma body remains eternally present: this is called "Vairochana." The three divisions of the \*Avatamsaka\*—the upper, middle, and lower—are all encompassed in a single phrase. The majestic jeweled tower shines clearly within one's own mind. Why wait upon earth and water to construct it? The \*Avatamsaka\* teaches the six characteristics to reveal the principle. If there were no dissolution \[of form\], how would completion arise? If there were no distinctions, how would the totality be manifested? If there were no differences, how would unity be shown? Thus even the construction of a temple from earth and wood is precisely what the Ten Mysterious Gates call "Entrusting an affair to express the principle, thereby generating understanding." Let this be your mirror, Xingfan—awaken yourself and awaken others.
