### 募造敬字菴疏

> Appeal for Building a Respect-for-Writing Shrine

娑婆世界，以音聲語言為教體，故一一文字，皆佛祖慧命，聖學源流所關也。敬字，即敬文宣至聖與迦文世尊，其開昏憒而培智種者，豈淺鮮哉！溫陵為文獻之邦，素稱佛國，今者有敬字菴之設，此洙泗道源所濬，亦西竺心光所映也。人皆可以為堯舜，凡有心者，皆得作佛。請從事於斯語，則凡點畫紙墨之委棄者，皆可見堯於牆、見佛於瓦礫矣。抑更有告焉，一切字紙，斷斷可與六經三藏同觀；而六經三藏，斷斷不可與一切字紙同視。菴成，請勒斯語。

> In this Saha world, teachings are conveyed through sound and language. Therefore, every single written word is connected to the wisdom-life of the Buddhas and patriarchs, and is the very source and stream of the sacred teachings. To revere words is to revere both the Supreme Sage of Culture (Confucius) and the World-Honored One of the Shakyas (Buddha). The benefits of opening up ignorance and cultivating the seeds of wisdom are by no means small! Wenling is a land of culture and literature, long known as a Buddha-country. Now, the establishment of this "Words Reverence Monastery" is both a channel through which the source of the Confucian Way (Zhu-Si) flows, and a reflection of the radiant Mind-Light from the Western Regions (India). Every person has the potential to become a Yao or a Shun; everyone with a heart can become a Buddha. I ask you to put this principle into practice: then, in every discarded scrap of paper bearing ink and characters, you may see Yao on the wall and the Buddha amidst the dust and rubble. Let me also add this: All word-scraps and written papers can most certainly be regarded on a par with the Six Classics and the Three Buddhist Tripitakas. However, the Six Classics and the Three Tripitakas can never be treated in the same way as ordinary word-scraps. When the monastery is completed, I request that these words be inscribed here.
