> Pureland Novice's Dedication of Merits for Buddha Recitation

> The scripture states, "Whoever once calls upon the Buddha's name has already achieved the path to Buddhahood." This means that the Buddha-nature, the fundamental cause of enlightenment, is inherent in every person. Therefore, the auxiliary causes derived from this nature—the seeds of practice and understanding—inevitably lead to the same ultimate realization as the fundamental nature itself. This is why the meditation on the Buddha (Buddha-mindfulness samadhi) is called the king of all samadhis, embracing all others. There are three methods for cultivating this samadhi: 1. \*\*Mindfulness of the Other Buddha\*\*: Relying on Amitabha Buddha's perfected virtues and splendor as the object of contemplation, you focus your mind on him—recalling his name, visualizing his features, reflecting on his forty-eight vows, his past efforts, his present transcendent powers, his excellent qualities, his pure body, or his sacred environment. All these are forms of mindfulness of the Other Buddha. The key is to maintain vivid, clear awareness with one-pointed concentration, free from distraction. When this samadhi is accomplished, you directly ascend to the Pure Land. The assembly of wise beings at Donglin Monastery exemplifies this. 2. \*\*Mindfulness of the Self-Buddha\*\*: Contemplate the present, single thought of your mind—subtle yet insubstantial, without inherent nature. It pervades all directions and time, beyond error and limitation, inconceivable. This thought contains all realms and their characteristics, equal to the Buddhas of past, present, and future. By observing deeply, you purify the five sources of affliction, clean the six sense faculties, break through fundamental ignorance, and enter the secret treasury. Examples include the Indian patriarchs, the six Chinese patriarchs, Great Master Nanyue, and Tiantai Master Zhiyi. 3. \*\*Mindfulness of Both Self and Other\*\*: Recognize that mind, Buddha, and sentient beings are not separate. Sentient beings dwell within the minds of Buddhas; Buddhas exist within the minds of sentient beings. Rely on the realized Buddha's perfected body and environment to reveal your own inherent wisdom. As the \*Contemplation Sutra\* says, "This mind creates the Buddha; this mind is the Buddha." Since your mind's inherent qualities are inconceivable and the power of the Buddha's realization is inconceivable, they respond to each other without obstacle. The ultimate fruit and perfect cause reflect each other perfectly. Examples include the practices of Master Yongming Yanshou and Master Chushi Fanqi. Though the methods differ, the destination is one. Follow any path, and you will reach the goal. Have no doubt and do not obstruct your own progress. Now, the novice Shengyan dwells in mind on the Pure Land and also uses this method to guide others. Know that just this single thought can make you a disciple of Great Strength Bodhisattva. Do not underestimate or belittle yourself. Also, I wish that all who see or hear this will rejoice deeply and register in the Lotus Assembly. Do not be arrogant toward others or scorn yourself. Thus, you may complete universal wisdom and empty the five turbidities. Strive on!
