> Steward’s Shrine Support Fund Appeal

> There is worldly filial piety, and there is transcendent filial piety. Worldly filial piety means caring for one's parents in every possible way, establishing oneself in the world, and walking the path of virtue. Transcendent filial piety means diligently cultivating the spiritual path and widely liberating beings across countless lifetimes. To perfectly embody both worldly and transcendent filial piety—like the venerable masters Huangmei and Muzhou—is rare indeed. Yet now I see such virtue in the layman Fuxian. Fuxian, from the Qingshan noble clan, was raised in the Confucian traditions of the Eastern Lu. In the prime of his life, he resolved to study Buddhism and journeyed widely to the gates of Zhenji and Boshan. Through the power of his practice and vows, he persuaded his father to observe a long-term vegetarian diet and cultivate the Way, personally serving him fine food for two years. He further encouraged his father to formally take monastic vows. Nearly a year later, his father passed away peacefully at the age of eighty-six. Fuxian then kept his father's reliquary at the foot of Mount Huqiu, chanting sutras day and night. This act shames all unfilial children in the world and washes away the false accusation that Buddhism neglects parental duty. Alas! Only by studying Buddhism can one truly understand Confucianism, and only a true Confucian can truly learn Buddhism. I, unworthy as I am, left home to become a monk before my father was buried and my mother was cared for. I had intended to wait until I fully understood the great matter of life and death before attending to these duties, but heavy karmic obstacles caused my beloved mother to leave me for the Western Pure Land. This eternal regret haunts me day and night. Fuxian alone was able to care for his father in life and honor him in death. I am truly ashamed beyond compare. A wandering monk like me cannot even provide modest assistance. So I offer these humble words, spreading this profound sentiment to all kind and filial people. May those who are happy to support Fuxian in completing this final act of filial piety also extend this compassion to all beings.
