### 大悲圓行疏

> Commentary on the Perfect Practice of Great Compassion

觀音大士與娑婆最有因緣，而大悲陀羅尼，尤為密傳心印祕要法門。蓋以不思議心，持不思議語，則不思議熏、不思議變真如，螟蛉咒子，不覺其肖之速也。顧此咒自四明尊者設立行法後，從元至明，未嘗絕倡。一傳於天台，再傳入武林，壇儀供具，於斯為盛，而法式理觀，不免有字經三寫，烏焉成馬之虞。余向遊吳越，每欲稍正其訛，乃久誦水潦鶴者，競嫌昏耄，付諸永歎而已。祖堂湛持開士，思如法搆壇嚴像，余喜此方緇素，未染訛習，猶可與正其始也。爰贅片言，使壇儀供具，如法先成，庶法式理觀，次第畢舉。如是則若顯若密，若禪若教，皆一以貫之矣。

> The Great Being Guanyin has the deepest affinity with this Saha world, and the Great Compassion Dharani is a particularly essential esoteric practice—a secret seal of the heart. By holding an inconceivable mind and reciting inconceivable words, one cultivates inconceivable transformation and refines one’s true nature. Just like the wasp larva chanting over a caterpillar, it unwittingly becomes like its teacher without delay. Since Venerable Siming established this practice, it has never ceased from the Yuan to the Ming dynasties. It first passed down through Tiantai and then spread to Wulin, where altars and offerings flourished. However, the ritual forms and contemplative methods inevitably suffered distortions through repeated copying—like the characters becoming "crow" mistaken for "horse." In my travels through Wu and Yue, I often wished to correct these errors, but those long chanting the water-and-marsh-bird’s cry dismissed me as senile. I could only sigh forever. Now the venerable Chanzhi from Zutang wishes to properly construct an altar and reverently install the sacred image. I am delighted that the monastics and laypeople here are not yet corrupted by wrong practices, so they can still begin correctly. I add a few words so that the altar, rituals, and offerings may first be established according to the Dharma. Then the ritual forms and contemplative methods can be carried out one after another. In this way, whether esoteric or exoteric, Chan or Doctrinal—all can be unified as one.
