> Refurbishment of the Great Hall of Fayun Temple on Wuru Peak, Mount Lu

> The Avatamsaka Sutra says, "If one wishes to fully understand the Buddhas of past, present, and future, one should observe the nature of the Dharma Realm: all things are created by the mind." Indeed, from the beginningless past to the endless future, it is simply this one mind—there is never a moment when it is not creating various forms of the five aggregates, various realms of existence, and various lands. When it creates, there is nowhere it comes from; when it destroys, there is nowhere it goes. Can it not be said that all is mind? Therefore, only those who realize this principle of all-mind can truly discuss what is created; and only those who are skilled in their creations can truly awaken to the all-mind. People today have a narrow view of this mind, unable to recognize that nothing exists outside the mind; and they also look down on practical creation, unable to see that no truth exists apart from things. So when we speak of adorning a Buddha land, they immediately say, "There is no need to cling to appearances." Alas! Appearances certainly should not be clung to, but can one cling to non-appearances as well? If one realizes the all-mind, then appearances are no different from non-appearances. The hall is created by the mind; the hall itself is the mind—how could there be any clinging? If one does not use the mind to create a hall, then one will use it to create various kinds of impure karmic environments and bodies. When does the mind ever stop creating, even for an instant? Creating a hall is a wondrous condition for entering the Buddha realm. When such conditions ripen, the seed of insight will sprout; when insight sprouts, the seed of true nature will shine forth. Then one will realize that creation is itself non-creation. Compared to those who waste the power of their mind creating other mixed karmas while claiming not to create, but ultimately cannot escape the cycle of rebirth—can they even be mentioned in the same breath? At the Dharma Cloud Monastery on Five-Peak Mountain in Mount Lu, the shrine has fallen into decay, day by day. A disciple of this monastery, without ever leaving the space of our minds, has created this excellent opportunity. I tell this to all monastics and laypeople: May your creation always be of the Buddha realm, and never of the nine other realms.
