### 念荳兒佛疏

> Recitation for the Salvation of Children

雪山有藥，名毘伽摩。眼若見之，眼得清淨；鼻若嗅之，鼻得清淨；身若觸之，身得安隱；若以塗鼓，軍中擊之，所有毒箭，應身拔出。嗟嗟！一莖草耳，何以厥功若此？愚者未免疑之。阿彌陀佛，萬德尊主，因積僧祇，果圓十劫。願王無盡，福慧無窮。散心一稱其名，亦滅八十億劫生死重罪。彼疑一莖草者，又安能深信無惑哉？有念佛者，不紀以珠，紀以荳，又將荳供海眾，使其淪肌膚，浹骨髓，乃至遍身毛孔，咸放佛光，八萬四千戶蟲，咸得度脫。此之功德，難議難思。念荳施荳，功德平等。荳為法界，十方諸佛，三世導師，皆在一粒荳上，轉大法輪，現寶王剎。此荳邪，非荳邪，非荳非非荳邪？能信此一粒荳者，可以無疑於一莖草矣。重說偈曰：

> On Snow Mountain there is a medicinal herb called Vigama. If the eyes see it, the eyes become pure; if the nose smells it, the nose becomes pure; if the body touches it, the body finds peace and ease. If it is smeared on a drum and struck in battle, any poisoned arrows lodged in soldiers will be instantly pulled out. Alas—it is just a single blade of grass! How can it have such power? Common people may doubt this. Amitabha Buddha, the honored lord of ten thousand virtues, accumulated merit for countless eons and realized his perfect fruit over ten kalpas. His vows are inexhaustible, his blessings and wisdom boundless. Even a distracted single recitation of his name can wipe away the heavy karma of birth and death spanning eighty billion eons. Those who doubt a single blade of grass—how could they deeply believe without confusion? Some practitioners of Buddha-recitation do not count with beads but with beans. They then offer these beans to the ocean-like assembly, so that the beans penetrate their skin, soak into their marrow, and even radiate Buddha-light from every pore of their body. The eighty-four thousand worms within are all liberated. This merit is difficult to fathom, difficult to conceive. Reciting beans and offering beans—the merit is equal. The bean is the Dharma-realm. All Buddhas of the ten directions and the guiding teachers of the three times turn the great Dharma-wheel and manifest the jeweled king’s land upon a single bean. Is this bean a bean? Is it not a bean? Is it neither bean nor not-bean? One who can trust in this single bean can have no doubt about a single blade of grass. Let me speak a verse again:

此荳泥丸突出難分剖；非荳咽下分明無處躲；非荳非非荳，大家傾出摩竭斗。

> This bean—a rice ball thrust out, hard to split apart; Not a bean—swallow it clearly, nowhere to hide; Neither a bean nor not a bean—everyone empties the Magadha measure.
