> \*\*Biography of Master Yiyuan Ruiguang\*\* (with Eulogy)

> Master Liaoyuan, born into the Zhou family of Changzhou County, was known in his youth as a knight-errant among the locals. At twenty-three, he suddenly developed a longing to transcend the worldly life, so he paid respects to Master Lanyuan Yuan at Ruiguang Temple and was given the monastic name Dingyuan. Seeing the phrase "stepping on a scale hammer as hard as iron," he became deeply puzzled and pondered it day and night without rest until he had a partial awakening. He then became puzzled by the question, "What is the secret that even ghosts and spirits cannot uncover?" After devoting many years to this, he gained further insight. When Master Zhanran of the Yunmen school traveled through Wu, Liaoyuan presented his insights, and Zhanran confirmed his enlightenment. From then on, he made reciting the \*Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment\* his nightly practice, and during the day he read the \*Great Perfection of Wisdom Sutra\*. In his interactions with people and his handling of affairs, he remained exactly as before, without showing any outward sign of his spiritual attainment. On the sixteenth day of the twelfth lunar month in the year Bingchen of the Wanli era, he said to Master Zhuyao Jing and others, "I will soon depart forever." He then took a calendar and chose the twenty-sixth day, adding, "People only die once—there's nothing remarkable about it. I will first create a death-like state, and you may observe it." He then sat in full lotus posture, and from his feet to his head, his body gradually became as cold as ice. After about an hour, he revived and said, "People fear death, but there is nothing extraordinary about it—it is like bathing in warm water or sleeping under a warm blanket, only one is too lazy to get up." When the appointed day arrived, he gave instructions to the entire monastery, telling them to seal his body in an urn and open it only after three years. He also said to his disciple Wuyun, "I have always taught you the \*Lotus Sutra\*. Now tell me: Is the paper the \*Lotus Sutra\*? Are the words the \*Lotus Sutra\*? Is the recitation the \*Lotus Sutra\*? If you understand, you may take away the entire boundless treasure. If you do not understand, then read it for another thirty years." He then gave a shout and said, "Now tell me: Is this shout the same as the entire \*Lotus Sutra\*, or is it different?" He shouted again, laughed heartily, and passed away in full lotus posture. The community enshrined his whole body in a stupa on the monastery's earthen hill. He was forty-six years old in worldly age, with twenty-four years in the monastic life. Because he followed the Four Practices of Peaceful Dwelling, he did not keep a personal following, and his robe and bowl had no direct heir. Now Master Jing has enshrined him in the ancestral hall, and offerings are made in spring and autumn without fail. In praise: The essence of the Chan school lies in subtle cultivation and silent realization, in perfect accord with the teachings of the scriptures. Those who grasp one technique or one state and then show off their entire hand, disparaging the scriptures, are merely nurturing the roots of birth and death. Master Liaoyuan came and went with ease. This was not merely due to his power of meditation on the cushion, but truly because the \*Perfection of Wisdom\* and the \*Sutra of Perfect Enlightenment\* had sealed his mind, and because he harmonized his light with the dust of the world in his dealings with others. Thus, although he had no opportunity to teach formally in his lifetime, the brilliance of his final moments already illuminated heaven and earth. Those afflicted with arrogance, upon hearing of this master's conduct, should feel ashamed.
