> \*\*Master Wan'an of Jixiang Temple\*\* Master Wan'an of Jixiang Temple, whose Buddhist name was Dayun, was from a family named Guo in Renhe, Hangzhou. His sister-in-law, Wu, devoted herself wholly to celibacy and austere spiritual practice. Inspired by her example, Master Wan'an went to Yongqing Temple to become a monk. He received the full monastic precepts at Yunqi. He then settled in the northern outskirts of the city, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to Pure Land practice. Soon, he attracted many followers. Master Zhiran Yuanjing, the abbot there, admired his pure way of life and donated his hermitage to become a monastery for all practitioners. Master Wan'an realized that this place had once been the site of the ancient Jixiang Temple. Together with a group of kind-hearted friends, he worked tirelessly to restore it to its former glory. Within just a few years, Buddha halls and monks' quarters were all splendidly rebuilt. The communal rules he established followed completely the standards set by the Yunqi tradition. All visiting Chan practitioners were warmly received and cared for. The community did not own fields for produce, nor did it stockpile firewood. Whatever was needed for daily life was entirely provided by external offerings. They avoided wrongful livelihoods, resolutely reformed the corrupt practices of their time, and strove fervently to return to the pure customs of ancient days. Once the monastery was well-established, Master Wan'an showed signs of a slight illness. At once, he stopped eating and drinking, curtailed his speech, and devoted himself solely to Pure Land practice. After a full month, his wife and daughters came to visit him. He scolded them, saying, "Why do you not recite the Buddha Amitabha's name, but instead come to think of me?" On his deathbed, he said to his senior disciple, Zhi Jing: "Sweep and clean for me, for the Buddha is coming to welcome me." He then propped up his body, sat upright in meditation, and passed away reciting the Buddha's name. He was fifty-nine years old in worldly age, and had been a monk for eleven years. His wife, Dafa, his sister-in-law, Dahai, his son, Zhishou, his daughter, Zhiyin, and his niece, Zhizhen - all of them left home to cultivate the path.
