### 吳興智福優婆夷往生傳并贊

> Biography of Laywoman Zhifu of Wuxing, Who Achieved Rebirth <note place="inline">with Eulogy</note>

優婆夷智福，姑蘇盧氏子，適新安程季清。季清篤信佛法，流寓吳興，力營福業。盧盡內政以助之，弗倦，好惠施，無私積，心言皆直，謹身節用，不喜御珍飾奇服，不恚詈給侍人。茹素，持珠，日課佛名二三萬，視世閒法如嚼蠟。壬申，年三十九，嬰篤疾，急請古德法師受歸戒，諮淨土法要，乃一意西馳，遇痛苦，惟勤稱佛號。季清為讀《華嚴》大經，至遍參知識處，一一解說，亦一一領會。復策之曰：「百劫千生，在此一時，努力直往，勿猶豫也。」於是勵聲呼佛者半月，見二高僧次第來，轉加精勤，徹夜猛念。厥母欲泣，厥女慰，俱遣之云：「無亂我心。」次日辰時，親見化佛蓮華，遂覺精神恬適，目色鮮明。急索香水沐浴，西向叉手，連聲念佛，吉祥而逝，則十一月初八日正午時也。日暮，遍身冷，頂門猶熱。贊曰：

> Upasika Zhifu was born into the Lu family of Suzhou and married Cheng Jiqing of Xin'an. Jiqing was a devout Buddhist; while living as a sojourner in Wuxing, he devoted great effort to cultivating merit. Lu managed all household affairs to assist him without ever tiring. She was generous, kept no private savings, and was straightforward in heart and speech. She was frugal in her personal conduct, disliked wearing fine jewelry or unusual clothing, and never scolded or cursed the servants. She ate a vegetarian diet, held her prayer beads, and daily recited the Buddha's name twenty to thirty thousand times, seeing worldly matters like chewing wax. In 1632, at the age of thirty-nine, she fell seriously ill and urgently requested the Elder Master Guide to administer the precepts. She consulted him on the essentials of the Pure Land path, then focused her mind entirely on the West. Whenever she felt pain, she simply redoubled her recitation of the Buddha's name. Jiqing read the great \*Avatamsaka Sutra\* to her, and when they reached the passage about the pilgrim's visits to teachers, he explained each one, and she understood them all. He further encouraged her, saying: "A hundred kalpas, a thousand lifetimes—it all comes down to this single moment. Strive forward with all your might and do not hesitate." For half a month thereafter, she called out the Buddha's name with great exertion. She saw two eminent monks come in succession, and her practice grew even more intense, so that she chanted fervently through the night. When her mother began to weep and her daughter tried to console her, she sent them both away, saying, "Do not disturb my mind." The next morning, during the \*chen\* hour, she personally saw a transformed Buddha and a lotus flower. Her spirit became calm and comfortable, and her eyes took on a bright, clear hue. She quickly asked for scented water to bathe, faced west with folded hands, and recited the Buddha's name repeatedly. She passed away auspiciously at high noon on the eighth day of the eleventh month. By evening, her entire body was cold, but the crown of her head remained warm. Praise says:

哀哉三界，愛欲為根。根株不拔，奚望西生。蓮華國土，永離塵情。此緣能斷，彼質斯成。勇矣智福，女中之英。快逢勝友，皆由夙因。一日一夜，淨念功殷。華臺接引，眼識分明。子母恩愛，枯木寒冰。吉祥善逝，長辭苦輪。我悲含識，纏使所嬰。戀此幻世，曠劫迷真。謬圖出要，罔知勝津。計取空果，違妙淨因。誰能正信，闊步高登。我今隨喜，願共群靈，頓除疑網，證入玄門。

> Alas, the three realms of existence are rooted in craving. If this root is not removed, how can we hope for rebirth in the Western Land? The land of lotus blossoms is forever free from worldly desires. Sever this attachment, and that pure realm can be attained. Brave and wise ones are the outstanding women among the virtuous. Swift encounters with noble friends come from causes planted in past lives. With one day and one night of unwavering pure mindfulness, A lotus pedestal will come to welcome you, and your vision will become clear and bright. The affection between mother and child is like dead wood or cold ice. Auspicious and noble is the one who departs well, forever leaving the cycle of suffering. I grieve for sentient beings, bound by the ropes of affliction, Clinging to this illusory world, lost in delusion for countless eons. Wrongly seeking the path to liberation, they fail to recognize the true crossing. Striving for empty fruits, they deny the wonderful cause of purity. Who can have genuine faith and stride forward with firm steps? Now I rejoice and wish, together with all beings, To instantly remove the net of doubt and enter the mysterious gate.
