> Preface to Three Works by Layman Yao Guangruo

> The essence of the Buddha-dharma lies in discipline, concentration, and wisdom. The virtues of Confucianism lie in wisdom, benevolence, and courage. The secret of the Pure Land lies in faith, aspiration, and practice. These three sets are not three—the three are actually one; This one is not one—the one must contain the three. To know that discipline, concentration, and wisdom are inseparable is wisdom; To practice them is benevolence; To not be overpowered by greed, anger, and ignorance is courage. To realize that the three virtues exist in both things and oneself, originally equal, is faith; To aspire, with the three virtues of my worldly practice, to reach the three virtues of the realized result, is aspiration; To directly make the three virtues of the realized result manifest through my worldly practice is action. This is what is called the wonder of the threefold Dharma. Confucius at thirty took his stand—he stood firm in this. Shakyamuni at thirty attained enlightenment—he realized nothing more than this. I recall in the winter of the year \*renwu\*, I first met Guangruo, Who was just twenty-one at the time. Now this winter marks his thirtieth birthday. An ancient said: “The Way is vast, without end; meeting people, one never exhausts it.” Although the Sage Confucius stood firm at thirty, he still dared not call himself perfectly humane; Although Shakyamuni attained enlightenment at thirty, he never gave up even the merit of threading a needle. Precisely because they stood firm in this, and realized this, they never abandoned it throughout all future ages. To be utterly without abandonment in this—that is what is called perfect sincerity without cease. Strive on. I will journey together with you to the realm of peace and safety, Taking the Limitless Life as teacher, and Guanyin and Infinite Light as companions.
