### 壽新伊大法師七秩序

> Preface to the Seven-Day Dharma Assembly of the Great Dharma Master Shou Xinyi

師壽六十，戒子之從旭遊者，謬以旭言稱壽。今師七十，高足復以壽序見託。旭猶憶辛未春，同師禮大悲懺於蓮居，程季清甫議六年法社。旭於觀堂中，夢十字街頭一大涼亭，懸燈十有餘盞，須臾風作，僅存一燈，孤明歷歷，維時妄意，厥祥在師，今果為蓮居獨存之一燈矣。然存此一燈，非偶然也。師以童身，給侍紹翁，備受惡辣鉗錘，乃克為晚成大器。生平戒律精嚴，梵行超卓，懺摩禪觀，靡不深習，而尤妙在虛懷好問。壬午，旭從閩出，即以《唯識合響》，殷勤下問。逮客歲以柬寄旭，仍命校讎。師於《唯識》講演二十餘遍，尚不恤下詢鄙夫，以視今之妄自滿足，空腹高心者，為何如哉。《易》曰「謙尊而光，卑而不可踰」，無量光、無量壽，胥在此矣。盡未來際，常住世閒，劫風起時，此燈愈熾，區區南山北海，可以喻師光壽也乎。

> Master, you have turned sixty, and those disciples who joined me in studying under you once mistakenly offered birthday wishes on my behalf. Now you are seventy, and your senior students have again asked me to write a birthday preface. I still recall in the spring of the Xinwei year, when I accompanied you in performing the Great Compassion Repentance ritual at Lotus Abode. Cheng Jiqing had just planned a six-year Dharma society. In the contemplation hall, I dreamed of a large pavilion at a crossroads, with more than ten lanterns hanging. Soon a wind arose, and only one lantern remained, burning brightly and distinctly. At the time, I assumed this omen referred to you, and indeed, you have become the solitary lamp still shining at Lotus Abode. Yet this lamp’s survival is no coincidence. From your youth, you served the venerable Shao, enduring harsh discipline and rigorous training, which enabled you to become a great vessel of Dharma in your later years. Your observance of precepts has been pure and stringent throughout your life, your practice of pure conduct extraordinary, and you have deeply studied repentance and meditative contemplation. But what is most admirable is your open-mindedness and eagerness to learn. In the year Renwu, when I returned from Fujian, you earnestly consulted me about your \*Harmonious Resonance of Yogacara\*. Then, last year, you sent a letter entrusting me with the task of proofreading. Although you have expounded on Yogacara in more than twenty discourses, you still did not hesitate to seek advice from a humble person like me. How unlike those today who are self-satisfied with shallow understanding and arrogant with empty minds! The \*Book of Changes\* says: "Humility exalts the honorable, and makes the lowly inviolable." Infinite Light and Infinite Life—these two are found within this humility. Throughout endless future ages, dwelling forever in the world, when the winds of kalpas arise, this lamp will only burn brighter. How can the limited mountains and seas of the south and north possibly compare to your light and longevity?
