> Incense Offering to the Venerable Master Wujin

> Though I am unworthy, in my early days on Mount Tiantai, I was blessed to behold your compassionate radiance. I admired your warm and reverent virtue, yet I could not fathom the vast ocean of the Dharma. Content with dark realization, I scorned meaning’s path; misled by sectarian gateways, I lost sight of the inner sanctum. By such actions, I planted seeds of offense in the ground of mind—and this was not rare. Later, as I passed through Chan monasteries and witnessed the ills of the age, I came to understand: if not for the Tiantai School, these flaws couldn’t be corrected. When the Tiantai teachings thrive, the Buddha-Dharma thrives; when they perish, the Dharma perishes—this is no falsehood. Yet toward you, Elder, I remained half-believing, half-doubting. Only after my covenant with my elder brother Chou did I finally incline toward the truth—only to learn that you had already been reborn in the Jeweled Pond. My regret and reverence only deepened. I privately reflect on your teaching methods, my heart stung with remorse and a will to repent—what use such repentance now? Alas! The master’s string has snapped; the wild foxes clamor in rivalry. Those who expound the teachings abandon the fine wine for the dregs; those who practice Chan fix their steps first, then ask the way. Who can rely on the teachings to awaken contemplation, washing away the folly of counting others’ treasure or speaking of food? Who can know the ford and set forth, freeing themselves from the chaos of blind cultivation and foolish practice? Elder—truly, you were a pillar in the current, a sun blazing at high noon. Have pity on me, a youthful one: I received no Dharma-milk in your lifetime, nor offered fine gifts after your passing. So I respectfully offer three incense-brands on my arm, piercing deep in repentance; three incense-brands on my arm, extending my hand from afar. May you, Elder, abiding never in quiescent light, now perceive the three realms of existence. Gaze upon the sorrow of this disciple, who bears the burden of the Dharma gate like a babe or a pillar. Bestow your blessing on this beginning mind in stilling thoughts. If our karmic resonance does not err, surely you will smile and welcome this offering.
