> Memorial for the Deceased

> Monk Zhi Xu, residing at Lingfeng Mountain, heard of the passing of the Venerable Bu Wang Yin. With reverence, I recited one scroll of the \*Brahma Net Sutra\* precepts, ten scrolls of the \*Sutra of Golden Light - Emptiness Chapter\*, and the True Words for Extinguishing Fixed Karma a thousand times. I have composed this text to offer my condolences from afar, saying: Alas! Throughout the ages, sages and saints have emerged from among the heroic, yet the truly heroic have always taken sages and saints as their ultimate aim. To abandon the standards of sages and saints while clinging to the bold spirit of heroes is a mistake. To mistake the heroic spirit for the character of sages and saints is an even greater error. You, Venerable One, regarded yourself as among the heroic. Initially, I missed meeting you as if our paths brushed past each other, but later I entrusted you with my deepest sincerity. However, my trust in you was in the hope of guiding you toward sainthood, while your self-regard never truly departed from the realm of heroism. When you practiced the \*Lotus Samadhi\*, I visited you at your meditation retreat. We talked through the night, and at that time, I admired you but also worried for you. At first, you were misled by the profound doctrine and mistakenly believed that since the teaching vehicle was urgent, the precepts could be relaxed. But when you were alarmed by a dream of riding a crane across the sea and breaking one of its wings, you realized that the precepts were equally urgent, yet you still failed to understand that the precepts themselves are the vehicle. Thus, although you performed repentance rituals, the principle of reality remained unclear. Even your physical posture was not properly adjusted, and your progress in the Path followed only your whims. Heavy obstacles arose before you; restlessness and regret pressed from behind; virtuous friends were isolated on other mountains; your understanding was confined to written words. With such conditions, extinguishing karma and awakening the mind was truly difficult. Yet, though you did not fully penetrate the source of the vehicle and precepts, you were never confused about the cause and effect of transcendence. While your failure to see the source brought you to a painful death from illness, your clarity about cause and effect will surely prevent you from falling into unfortunate rebirths. I grieve for you, but I also rejoice for you. You too may find comfort in the unseen realm. Alas! In these degenerate times, most spiritual practitioners fail, and few succeed. May you truly believe in the power of the \*Lotus Sutra\* and the compassionate vows of Amitabha. Quickly cast aside selfish attachments of attachment and aversion, and swiftly reach the golden lotus shore at the crossing. When my own life ends, please reach down your hand to welcome me. Together, let us behold the Honored One, and share in the sacred melody of the Dharma. Then, looking back to the scene by the Lake West Hall, beside the image of the Welcoming One, where we bared our hearts in repentance and vowed with all our being—such indeed is the interweaving of cause and effect, a promise never to be forgotten.
