> Eulogy for the Stupa of Master Zhuanyu's Hair, Nails, and Robe

> Alas! It is not difficult for people to love one another, but it is difficult to truly know one another. Sir, you are one who truly knows me. Even if there were one or two in this world who both love and understand me, they would still not match you in shared purpose. Though I dare not compare myself to your virtue, as lofty as Mount Tai, I am fortunate that in three things we are not far apart: We both value simplicity and reject empty formalities, unwilling to conform to the trends of the age. We both annotate sutras and commentaries, praise the precepts, unwilling to sell dog meat under a sheep's head. We both delight in plain living and accept solitude, unwilling to be shackled by the institutions of monasteries or to be restrained by their fetters. Alas! That a senior elder of the Dharma gate like you should have such abundant regard for me, and that our aspirations should align so perfectly—how could I not hold you in my heart? The depth of your realization is beyond my measure, but allow me to briefly record what I most admire. In today's spiritual circles, how many elders are not entangled by fame, lured by profit, or reliant on power and status? How many walk the ancient path of self-respect as you do? How many today do not use shallow tricks to dazzle the ignorant, leaving them astounded? How many are as plain and steady as you? How many today do not indulge in fine robes, dwell in grand halls, and follow every whim? How many are clad in tattered clothes and straw sandals, living in thatched huts on earthen steps like you? How many today do not carefully select attendants, marching with a retinue before and behind? How many personally do their own chores, not seeking comfort and enjoyment like you? How many today do not go with the tide and sink into the mud, calling it "skillful means" and "compassionate adaptation to the world"? How many refuse to conform to others and willingly accept the mockery of being single-minded, as you do? Therefore, all who hear of your conduct become inspired: the greedy become honest and restrained, the timid become resolute and unwavering. Such is the purity of Boyi’s holiness—can this be compared to those who bend their principles for momentary gain, whose bodies may survive but whose reputations are already lost? I have always grieved that the true Dharma of the Tathagata has been corrupted first by those who parrot what they hear without understanding, and then by those who are fierce in demeanor but weak within—sheep in tigers' clothing. When the father takes revenge, the son will surely turn to robbery. If men imitate such conduct, what wrong will they not do? As long as your robe and bowl survive, your spiritual legacy shall not be lost. Surely there will be those who hear of you and arise, helping to hold back the tide of decadence in these final days.
