> Memorial for the Venerable Yung Wei

> Alas! Your journey with me began at the great master’s command. When you first returned from hearing the \*Mahayana Calming and Contemplation\* teachings, the master tested your understanding. You answered with clarity, and so he asked you to step onto the ancestral hall. I, in turn, entrusted you with assisting in temple affairs. But my deep appreciation for you was not only for your ability to listen to the scriptures—it was for your dedication to serving. I heard that when you lived with Master at Cloud-Dwelling Temple, you labored tirelessly for the community, never sparing your own life. When Master fell ill, you stayed by his side through the sweltering summer, not removing your clothes for over sixty days—filial piety of this depth would be exceptional even toward one’s own parents. After the master passed, you returned to study the Dharma’s principles while continuing your temple duties. Then I fell gravely ill, and you attended to me with the same devotion you had shown Master. Now you have departed. With such a pure heart and such passionate spirit, how could you fade away while still under thirty? It is no wonder that you held on so fiercely, unwilling to journey westward. Yet behind your reluctance lies a constricted vision. Since beginningless time, we have cast off bodies and taken new ones beyond counting—more countless than the grains of sand in an ocean. Now, by rare grace, we meet wise teachers and virtuous friends, and hear of the Western Pure Land—the incomparable, perfect, sudden, and transcendent path of liberation. We should fear only one thing: returning home too late. But you, you wished to spend this illusory hundred-year life pursuing knowledge, founding monasteries, and covering the world with your fame to find satisfaction. Did you not consider that in the West there is infinite knowledge, a boundless sangha, and a name that resounds throughout the ten directions and three times? This desire for quick results and small achievements is what holds you back. Take now the virtuous deeds you performed for your teacher, and all the roots of goodness you have accumulated since beginningless time. Gather them all before you, and dedicate them to the vast ocean of Amitabha Buddha’s vows. Resolutely and without the slightest hesitation, set your course directly for the Land of Ultimate Bliss. I will soon complete this life’s illusory circumstances. I wait for you to come, following the Three Holy Ones, to call me to bathe together in the Seven-Jeweled Lake.
