> Memorial for My Wise Younger Brother, Yīn

> Alas! Liaoyin, have you come to this? From your youth, you made a vow—have you failed to fulfill it? I was determined to help you succeed, yet now I will never see you again. I have been grieving for ten disciples, recalling you, and now you have become another cause for my grief. Since you first came to me, it has been twenty-five years, and you followed me for nineteen. Your strengths, I know them all; your weaknesses, I also know them fully. I was eager to correct your flaws, but you distrusted me and left. I was set on nurturing your strengths, so I constantly bowed and chanted to protect you—yet in the end, you could not protect yourself. Was this karma from past lives or the circumstances of this present life? I still remember when you and Cheyin first studied under me. I earnestly urged you both to learn from each other: you should have learned from Cheyin’s resolve, and Cheyin from your simplicity. After that, Cheyin excelled in Vinaya studies but ultimately died due to his lack of simplicity. And now you, who had just begun to grasp the Tiantai teachings, also died in your cell because of a lack of resolve. Indeed, the power of afflictions is strong—this is my shortcoming. My faith and sense of shame are my strengths. That I do not conform to the various sectarian views is my shortcoming; that I possess a unique insight into the teachings and never rest content, studying and advancing daily—this is my strength. A good disciple learns from my strengths and avoids my weaknesses. Thus, Confucius said, “When you see a wise person, think of emulating them; when you see an unwise person, reflect on your own faults.” Choose what is good and follow it, change what is not. But you did not learn from my sense of shame, nor my diligent study and progress. How could this be called good learning? Your failure was half-hearted. The fault truly lies with me, not with you. I grieve that your aspiration was cut short in youth. I grieve that your teacher-uncle’s dedicated efforts did not bring you great attainment. I grieve that you only entered the door of the perfect sudden teaching, never reaching its inner chamber. I grieve that you contracted a terrible illness and died alone in your cell, and I do not know if your final thoughts arose with right mindfulness. I grieve that my disciples who could have served as beams and pillars have departed one after another, leaving me with no thread of hope. Alas! The Dharma is in decline, and this is not recent. The obstacles of sentient beings are grave. The Buddha’s compassion is like the sun, yet the blind do not see it; the Buddha’s compassion is like rain, yet those overturned do not receive it. You have seen a little light; you have received a little rain. Why did you stop halfway, unable to persevere? I perform repentance for you; I recite sutras for you. Your spirit is not far—you should know my sincerity. Receive this with joy and use it to aid your rebirth in the Pure Land. When you are reborn there, please tell the Buddha for me: I wish for the light of wisdom to shine into my dark depths, allowing me to gain clarity and act without error. My life will soon end; may I return early to the Pure Land realm. There, together with you, we shall see the seven treasures and eight virtues. May my own practice be perfected swiftly, and may I guide others without end. Even if the sky could be erased, my vow of dedication would never cease. Alas! With deepest grief, I offer this.
