> Eulogy for the Great Dharma Master Xinyi

> Alas! The true transmission of the essential teaching has been lost to the world for so long. The ancients grasped the source of this teaching, so even when they divided it into different aspects, those aspects naturally came together. People today only grasp superficial resemblances of the teaching, so even when they try to unify it, they only create more divisions. This is truly a cause for weeping and long sighs—how much more so when it is not just a matter of three or seven instances? I (Ouyi) was born late, and was not fortunate enough to learn directly from the venerable Yunqi (Zhuhong) or the honorable Shaojue. Yet I was blessed to form a friendship with you, my teacher, that transcended the usual boundaries of age, lasting nearly thirty years. It was as if I had indeed encountered the two great masters Yunqi and Shaojue. In this era, the Dharma path is increasingly confused and corrupted: purple masks as vermilion, vulgar music overruns the elegant. It is like carving filth into a piece of sandalwood. We have only you, my teacher, an elder of great virtue and advanced years, who silently stabilizes this chaos, promoting the Dharma and the precepts, making your very being a scripture and your voice the sutras. There is no need for us to be like Mencius, fond of argument; your presence alone made the cunning jackals and foxes already lose their nerve. How unfortunate that you have now entered nirvana so swiftly! Last year, when I offered my birthday wishes, I thought I would still have one or two more years to behold your compassionate face and pour out my innermost thoughts. But now that can never happen again; could this not be a profound pain? You, my teacher, long perceived the sincere hardships of Ouyi, thus honoring me with your friendship beyond the usual ranks. Now, you dwell high upon the lotus seat, with a perfectly clear wisdom-eye; I am sure you see my trials even more acutely. In this vast, blind world, how would I dare to seek a true fellow traveler who understands me? As I reverently read your final instructions, every word becomes a golden needle for this degenerate age. Your many disciples will surely uphold and spread your teachings with respect. With the complete Dharma for benefiting both self and others, your work of liberating beings is done, with no regrets left. But now that the sun of the Dharma has set, the entire world is blind. How could I, Ouyi, not feel sorrow for the countless beings who have yet to cross to the other shore?
