> Hundred Verses on the Avatamsaka Sutra<note place="inline">with Preface</note>

> A billion worlds can fit within a single mote of dust—this is not about the mutual identification of the many and the one. The entire universe can manifest at the tip of a hair—this is not about the interpenetration of the large and the small. It is simply the way of reality, naturally so, beyond thought or conception. To divide the ordinary from the sacred, to compare the shallow and the deep, is like inviting a flower in empty space to bear fruit. To reject words, to shun practice and realization, is like forbidding a child born of stone from being born. Realization upon seeing the morning star is like planting two eyebrows on your eyes. Proclaiming it universally in great assemblies is like painting thousands of colors in the sky. Yet, at the level of phenomenal activity, not a single speck of dust can be found; nonetheless, in the realm of ultimate truth, all phenomena shine forth brilliantly. Great is this name that transcends all opposites! Square is this form that eliminates all distinctions of more or less. Its breadth reaches the limits of a single pore, as vast as boundless space. Its wisdom is the ordinary mind of a single thought, which is directly the true and eternal wonderful awareness. “Flower” means cause and result are simultaneous. “Ornament” means subject and object are non-dual. Thus, whether applied universally or specifically, it can be followed and upheld. All ten realms honor it; all three times follow the same path. When you take one pill, all fragrances are present. When you drink one drop, you taste all rivers at once. So, invite the lamp post and the stone lion to join the tangled vines of words.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 1: The Wondrous Adornments of World Rulers. A verse says:</note> Nations in splendid robes bow before the royal crown, At the imperial feast, incense clings to embroidered silk. Without seeing the flourishing branches in the royal garden, Who would believe the vast sky's rain and dew nourish all? Stepping through the waves, you find it's nothing but water; Weaving threads together, you casually call it silk. Do not disdain the mountain stream's gentle sound— The great ocean never refuses a single small current.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 2: The Appearance of the Tathagata. Verse:</note> Beams of light from every tooth pervade realms as countless as dust, Hosts and guests gather from the ten directions like clouds. From between the brows and beneath the feet, light emerges and returns; The ultimate fruit, you should know, is itself the true cause. The lotus appears, yet never leaves its fundamental nature; The sublime sound—how could it come from anyone else? Listen carefully to the words of this gatha: White buffaloes and black cats know this most intimately.

> Thus have I sung: Fetching water, carrying firewood—this is joy enough. Who lacks the samadhi that hides the body within? To seek the Buddha's hand to stroke one's crown, Is to turn away from the wish-fulfilling gem hidden in one's own robe. A small mirror holds the reflections of the whole world; A tiny cloud can sprinkle rain on a billion withered lands. So the sacred realm itself recites these verses with me, Calling forth the lonely moon's reflection on the vast blue sea.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 4: The Attainment of Worlds. Verses</note> The Great Awakened One sees the ocean of existence as a single bubble; Yet within that bubble, the entire ocean is contained. Do not mistake the ten thousand things for something apart from yourself— For if you cling to the beard, you lose the face.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Five: The Adornments of the Flower Treasury World. Hymn:</note> Nostrils hang downward, eyes stretch crosswise. Pores are delicate, skin and flesh connect. The earth-element is no different—dense forests and grasses stand. A lion in full majesty—why distinguish elephant and rabbit? If you wish to know the splendor of the Flower Treasury, It never leaves this very moment’s peaceful abiding. To seek mystery outside the mind Is to lose the nature inherent in this very instant.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 6: Vairocana. Verse.</note> The Jambu continent was originally the realm of the Wheel-Turning King, After many conquests and campaigns, its borders were finally fixed. They once heard barbarian flutes playing under the moonlight, Yet now, they would be stricken with grief even without the cranes' cries.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 7: The Names of the Tathagata. Verses say:</note> Though ten thousand names are used to call him, Is there a single man who is not a hero? Ask now: this one who preaches the Dharma— Is Manjushri just one, or are there many Manjushris?

> (The Chapter on the Four Noble Truths, Part Eight: A Hymn says) Medicine and illness are linked in endless strands— Each time they're mentioned, new misinterpretations arise. Beyond arising, beyond measure, all returns to non-doing, For the vast ocean has always contained its many waves.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 9: The Light of Enlightenment. Verses say:</note> For many autumns, no word has come from my homeland; Even in dreams I search, tears never fully dry. At the start of spring, a startled bird cries out, So chaotic—I can't bear to look in the mirror; it doubles my sorrow.

> <note>Chapter 10: The Bodhisattva's Inquiry on Illumination. Verses say:</note> Like a rare melody too refined for common ears, Siblings, first learn to play the clay and bamboo flutes together. When Hua Zhou's widow mourned for three years, All of Qi frowned, unable to understand her grief.

> <note>Chapter 11: The Pure Conduct</note> A stick strikes a stone man's head— an old man enters the arena. A loving mother chewing food for her child is not shameful; she urges her child to study the great writings diligently. Once you study them and understand true propriety, your mind will be filled with elegant, refined thoughts.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 12: The Virtuous Leader. A verse says:</note> Chasing shadows and mistaking the head, you wander through countless ages. But when the frantic mind settles, the nose is right before your eyes. The divine pearl is offered for your use— Clothes not woven by silkworms, food not grown by plowing.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 13: Ascending to the Summit of Mount Sumeru. Verses said:</note> Even on flat ground, storms can drown us— And we pass along tales of stillness and lofty heights. The Buddha’s body fills all, with no coming or going; Do not let specks of gold dust cloud the eye.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 14: Hymns of Praise on Mount Sumeru's Peak. A verse says:</note> Huddled in crowds, they toy with their own spirit, Wasting entire fortunes, destroying their own doors. They sing a strange and scrambled tune, But in the end, they'll right the old sand-basin.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 15: The Ten Abodes. Verse.</note>A single finger raised, Gautama refused to hurt. Angulimala chased on, unwilling to desert. Then all at once, he laid down his knife. Lost forever, the hair his mother gave him at birth.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Sixteen on the Holy Practice. A verse says:</note> If you break one bucket, make it into one bucket — The Recluse's words are not vague or muddled. The battle at Poyang secured the land south of the river; Even the Sage Emperor relied on the courage of his three armies.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 17: The Merit of the Initial Awakening Mind. Verse:</note> When seeking the mind, past, present, future can't be caught—from where could the awakening mind arise? Yet, one night the east wind brings news of spring, the garden fills with blossoms, streams fill with water.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 18: The Quality of Clarity. A verse says:</note> When children are filial, a father's heart is at ease. When ministers are worthy, the sovereign's throne is secure. Founding a enterprise is indeed not easy, Preserving its success is especially challenging. Like a carriage wheel or a bird's wing, The bright moon shines, bringing a chill to those beneath it.

> <note>Chapter Nineteen: Ascending to the Palace of the Yama Heaven. Verse:</note> The heaven called "Time-Division" has ground like clouds, Peacocks and swan kings—long known for their transformations. Yet the fisher casts his line in the deep sky, Stirring up chaotic waves across the ocean floor.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 20: Hymns of Praise in the Yama Palace</note> Notes of the musical scale all form a single melody, Beneath the wise and enlightened rule of a sage monarch. All praise the sun and moon of Yao and Shun's golden age, Yet they sigh that hermits like Chao and You remained unaware.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 21: The Ten Practices. Verses.</note> Amid ten thousand blossoms adorns the grove of merit, Birds sing, flowers fall, shadows dense and deep. Traveling in the dark, no light allowed until one arrives— Just as you step outside, the grass has grown deep.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 22: The Ten Inexhaustible Treasuries. A verse says:</note> To master the house, you must be the child who breaks it— Scattered gold is nothing but mud in the mud. Deng Tong died of starvation—his fate was thin, For Heaven's rain and dew have no favorites.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 23: Ascending to the Tushita Heaven Palace<br>Verses</note> Selling romance completely without need of gold, Peach blossoms like flames, willows like smoke. Lute songs on painted boats revel in bright moonlight, They say this year is just like last year.

> <note>Chapter 24: Verses of Praise in the Tusita Palace</note> Why air your household shame abroad? You've never stolen, yet you're charged with theft. How many wanderers in border towns, At the first watch's drumbeat, feel their hearts break in grief.

> A town submerged, pink clouds fill the sky, Wisps of chilly smoke in villages rise. The plow ox, knowing its way, heads home on its own— No village boy needs strain to pull it on.

> Hanging from a beam and stabbing one’s thigh—refining plans by hard work— He convinced the King of Yan to ally with Zhao. But how does that compare to the Red Emperor’s son of old, Who, upon entering the pass, had already bound the Qin infant?

> <note place="inline">Chapter 26: The Ten Grounds. Verse says:</note> The earth is steady and vast, with virtues beyond measure, Carrying all and giving birth to all, straight and square. Observe the four primary elements, yet no separate nature arises. No contradiction that ten mountains each claim their kingship. Clever monks, ponder this carefully: Dust motes and Buddha-lands are but shadows in a bubble— Do not waste the radiant light between your brows.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 27: The Ten Samadhis. Verses say:</note> Coming and going is not true samadhi— Tell me, what nature does a moment have? Even if you seek to see Samantabhadra's form, You'll merely add another ailment to Samantabhadra's eyes. Don't you see? A woman sits in lotus by the Buddha's throne, While Manjushri vainly displays his powers. Abandon all hindrances—come down from above; A bowl truly has no handle from the start.

> Hungry, eat. Tired, sleep. No need to plan—just trust the natural way. How many idle days and months have passed away? There remains only autumn water and the endless sky.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 29: The Ten Forbearances. Verse:</note> With no place to stand, not even a needle’s tip, Swallowing pain in silence, only you can feel it. But once you grasp the idle craft of the white-robed one, Your sleeves hang empty, yet you have all you need.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 30: The Boundless Eon</note> This subtle mind-king transcends all measurement, While countless eons become ever clearer. The universe of atoms arises and dissolves— How could the Five Eyes calculate it all?

> <note>Chapter 31: The Lifetime. In verse:</note> Just like the Millet Dream, chasing fame is a fleeting game, This fundamental matter is clear—yet we're lost in confusion or awakening. If we wish to tell day from night in the Pure Land of Bliss, Then from that Land of Ultimate Bliss, we ask about our return.

> <note place="inline">Another verse</note> On an eyelash of a tiny insect, there are many valleys and peaks. One could settle there for winter or summer, choosing a good place to live. Even if the fires of the apocalypse raged all around, This place remains cool and pleasant, with abundant tranquility.

> <note>Chapter 32: The Abodes of the Bodhisattvas - Verses</note> Every color, every speck of dust, is itself a sacred place of practice— Why trouble yourself to carve flesh and create new wounds? Countless foolish men and women have been deceived, Rushing east and west, oblivious to their own true home.

> <note>Chapter 33: The Inconceivable Nature of the Buddha. Verse.</note> <note>Broken rhymes with "hui," strange with "gui," and divination with "zhi."</note> A single thought arises from conditions, yet nothing is truly born; The nine realms are like phantom flowers in space—empty and destined to decay. Old dead wood and rotting vines Often become goblins and demons. You are permitted to ponder and reflect, But not to consult tortoise shells or cast hexagrams.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 34: The Ten Vast Bodies of the Tathagata — Verse</note> The Buddha said: "No body is the great body," Like dewdrops sparkling on a hundred blossoms—full of spring. Fools still cling to ninety-seven marks, But only one flawless nature surpasses even the thirty-two perfect signs.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 35: The Auspicious Marks and Radiant Virtues of the Tathagata. Verse:</note> The perfect light of the thousand-spoked wheel shines as king of radiance, The Bodhisattvas in hell raise their heads, their dignity unbowed. The three levels of the ten grounds, though complete and sudden, Seem wasted on those who, in the world below, indulge in careless ease.

> A single thought free from anger is Samantabhadra's way— Easy to talk about, hard to practice every day. How many in this world play in the tides of life, Yet do not know how to steer their boat in shallow waters.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 37: The Manifestation of the Tathagata. A verse says:</note> Throughout the realm, no trace of origin is found, Yet family and kin become haunting spirits, always around. Between the brows, a subtle mark spreads its magic might; From the mouth, a radiant glow turns into demon's light. Clearly, the gold within the house is shown and teased, Leading children and grandchildren to seek outside, ill at ease. Even if you manage to grasp it in your hand, Tomorrow's dawn will not be what today's world has planned.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 38: Transcending the Mundane. A Poem:</note> Flowers bloom on branches long and short— Spring's colors have no high or low. Touch but a single hair, And the whole body trembles with fear. Even if clouds pour from a vase, Such words can never be fully spoken. The lotus naturally grows from water— No need to paint emptiness.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 39: Entering the Dharma Realm. Verse:</note><note place="inline">Notes: Harm, beggars, deception.</note> The Lion’s Roar Samadhi— Has it ever been hidden? Yet sitting in water we die of thirst, Because we fear drowning and seek cover. Since recognizing the Beloved, We no longer beg along the road. Turning over on a rabbit’s horn, Making sense in a turtle’s fur. No matter if waters run dry or mountains end, We never stop at the doorway—not even a step.

> <note place="inline">The Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Verses</note> The Ten Great Vows lead us to the Pure Land. In the final, crucial gate, everything is laid out plainly. To hesitate or second-guess brings a thousand mistakes. To argue about essence and mind is to bind oneself without a rope. Only by personally seeing the Infinite Light of the Tathagata Can one know these words are not mere jest. A message for those who study Zen and philosophy: Stop your idle, convoluted speculations about the ultimate.

> <note>In the east of the City of Blessings, in the Sarala Grove of Adornment, the Bodhisattva Manjushri said in verse:</note> Sentient beings dwell in the ground of ignorance, While Buddhas abide in fundamental, true wisdom. From the start, there’s only one true moon— Why speak of “this” or “that”? Once you’ve awakened the supreme aspiration for enlightenment, How could you still be lost in names and miss the meaning? Travel through a hundred cities of mist and stream, Yet never have you strayed an inch from it.

> <note place="inline">Haiyun Bhikshu of the Seashore Kingdom: Samanta-netra Dharma-gate</note> Like an ocean's vast expanse, thoughts arise at will, Bringing forth Tathagatas with a brilliant, shining glow. This single verse surpasses what all ocean-ink could fill, Left as a pointing needle for those who do not know.

> <note>In a forest settlement, the Elder Liberation, the Tathagata's unimpeded magnificent liberation gate. The verse says:</note> Limitless Buddha-lands in splendor vast, Within a pure body they are cast. The truth revealed: it's only your own mind, Don't seek elsewhere for miracles divine.
