> Great Thunder Peak: A Hymn of Enlightenment

> The true form has no shadow to wait for; The seven flowers and eight cracks analyze the sandalwood. All sages lose their grip; A thousand differences and ten thousand distinctions return to the Bohai Sea. When the true command is fully raised, Even if it’s by the window of a thatched hut, How could mice and sparrows pass through? When a single thread opens a side passage, Even within the Hall of Universal Origin, Common people may come and go freely. Therefore it is said: Gain it, and a slave’s white ox shakes heaven and earth; Lose it, and all Buddhas and Tathagatas furrow their brows and shut their eyes. This Great Buddha’s Summit, the Shurangama King of Samadhi, With its twenty-five methods of perfect penetration, Each sound is a poison drum, Obliterating the life-force of the six sense faculties, objects, and consciousnesses; Each dharma is fine nectar, Awakening the bloodline of emptiness, conventional, and middle-path wisdom. One might say: the whole body is illness, the whole body is medicine; Wherever there is an opening, there is a needle. Even if one retreats into the deepest afflictions, How could they escape the master-healer’s wondrous hand? Kneading a cake into a ball stops a hungry child’s cries; Refining butter into wine heals the chronic ailment of intense light. Just watch the wooden horse whinny in the wind— Do not say the clay ox sinks into the sea. Touch a painful spot—your own body knows your own pain; Dig up a treasure—everyone shares the blessing, everyone enjoys it. Thus each verse is attached here, As a whip-shadow for those of sharp faculties.

> <note place="inline">Kauṇḍinya, having awakened to the Four Noble Truths through the Buddha's voice, proclaims in verse:</note> At the Deer Park, they first heard the teaching outside the gate, While devas and hungry ghosts dispute over a single river. Then, overnight an eastern wind brings spring's message— And every plum blossom blooms on the mountain peak.

> <note place="inline">Upavanasiddha realized that the nature of form comes from impurity. A verse says:</note> A puppet struts its role upon the stage, Startling the puppeteer who finds it real. The King of Chu, enraged, then tears the body apart— Bone from sinew, limb from limb in cruel division. With eyes that met but once, no word comes since, So sit and hear the cuckoo's cry in the lonely forest.

> <note place="inline">The Novice Boy Shanxiang observed incense and realized the vanishing of all perceptions. A poem says:</note> A young bride, just dressed, leans by her jade-green tower; Her groom, at dawn, still shy, hides his morning hour. But the call to arms, without reason, sends them to war— Under the moon, barbarian flutes bring evening's sorrow.

The subtle smile, still now, leaves its stolen proof behind; In a peaceful world, affairs scatter like tangled flax.

> <note place="inline">Aniruddha's Vajra Samadhi of Joyful Vision and Illumination. Eulogy:</note> Blind eyes become seeing eyes— How could illumination depend on worldly dust? It blazes through the billion worlds, Opening the dew-free, true essence. Mind's eye and flesh-eye hang on the wall— Peach blossoms and plum blossoms laugh at people.

> <note place="inline">The Mind-Dharma of the Single Flavor of Purity, as taught by Gavampati. Verse:</note> At times nectar is poison, at times poison is nectar. But cleverness turns to folly, mistaking confusion for awakening. Summon the master within the bottle—then the pointing finger loses its way.

> <note>Piṅgalaka Vasya, who fully awakened to the mind’s nature and shed attachment to the body, extols thus:</note><row>In mud indeed there are thorns, but beyond the pain, where is the body seen? Emptiness shatters all the hundred distractions, white clouds bar the ferry crossing. If you wish to know the news of no-pain, a lame turtle or blind tortoise may be closer kin.</row>

> <note place="inline">Subhuti understood emptiness throughout countless eons. A verse says:</note> Mountain-sized in a mustard seed, tightly packed— Where can you turn to breathe? > <note place="inline">Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, awakened through the heart-mind, proclaimed in verse:</note> A universe in a single hair—like a reed organ’s sound, The precious White Elephant King is made to work for no reason. Even if your awareness brilliantly illuminates the universe, Your nostrils still point upward on your face.

> <note>Pūrṇa Maitrāyaṇīputra attained Arhatship through the Lion's Roar. The verse says:</note> The meaning is more profound than the words that express it — How to remove a wedge? > <note place="inline">On Ucchuṣma's Fire Samadhi: A Verse</note> A single spark can set Mount Sumeru ablaze— No need to ask the fireflies about vastness great. Lift the iron hammer, see it's forged of iron through and through; Why waste eons sinking in the muddy pool?

> <note place="inline">Maitreya Bodhisattva's Samadhi of Mind-Only. A gatha says:</note> On a rope, there is no snake; its nature is hemp all along.
