> Songs in Praise of the Thirty-Three Chapters of the Lotus Sutra<note place="inline">with Preface</note>

> Lush clusters of flowers, splendid circles of brocade—yet no dust particle can rest. Naked and bare, stripped and pure—yet all dharmas are manifest in full. All the Buddha's forty-nine years of kind-hearted, grandmotherly talk—cannot be grasped. All the patriarchs' one thousand seven hundred iron brooms—cannot sweep it away. Unless you touch your own nose, you will never kick over the nest of habitual patterns. In the thorny forest, they are skilled at swinging their arms freely. On the ground of purity, they turn straight forward without hesitation. Only our venerable Master Tiantai, the Chan Master Zhiyi— awakened to great insight at Dasu, saw Vulture Peak right in the midst of words, unfolded the power of a single turning of the Dhāraṇī, manifested the eloquence of the four inconceivables, exhausted where the provisional and the real return, revealed the profound depths of the original and the traces. The Five Profound Meanings split open the crown—cold bones of the skull. The Four Explanations of the Text soaked the whole body—blood seeping from every pore. Pierced the fleshy eyes of scholastic teachers. Blazed open the dark gates of Chan practitioners. The string of the master's lute vibrates—fly and walker alike flee. The poisoned drum is struck—near and far, all fall dead. But because the perfect teaching stands supreme, dull minds are like the blind. The ocean of meaning is vast— a leaf boat is about to capsize. This mountain monk, caring not for his eyebrows, has composed one verse for each chapter— like helping the tyrant oppress the people, adding tangled vines to an already tangled field. If you don't understand, the peg is pulled, the nail is pried away. If you do understand, you lose your body and forfeit your life.

> The name comes from a Dharma metaphor. The verse says: Mind, Buddha, and sentient beings cannot be separated. The Three Mysteries and Three Essentials are hard to fathom. Picking up a single stalk, using it like a golden body— It makes the ascetic laugh heartily.

> <note place="inline">The true nature of reality is the essence. The verse says:</note> The vast cosmos is not enough to astonish, As the four subtle elements are never separate from their origin. I clearly reveal it to all directions, Yet they say only the Tathagata truly knows.

> <note place="inline">The core teaching is the cause and effect of the One Vehicle. Verse:</note> When all streams are cut off, what remains? Every drop returns to its source—no more, no less. Having walked the vast oceans of fragrant waters in all ten directions, How many places did the tip of your boot disturb the clear waves?

> <note place="inline">This is used to cut through doubts and give rise to faith. The gatha says:</note> Drifting with the waves and bobbing in the current—such a pitiful state. Within brightness, there is darkness; its meaning is deeply mysterious. The great wind scatters thousands of clouds, Revealing the lone moon, full throughout the night.

> <note place="inline">The supreme cream of the Dharma is our teaching. A verse says:</note><row>Though from the same cow the milk derives, Transformation by transformation, no outside force requires. Eat your fill, let the spleen's strength be found— But do not let young children suffer harm unwound.</row>

> <note place="inline">Chapter 1: The Introduction. A Gatha.</note> When the white light shines halfway, The tens of thousands in the east are like wax seals stamped in mud. If you try to question Manjushri to discern the truth, You’ll just plant two more eyebrows on your own eyes. Now tell me, what does it mean to shine the light fully? Ha! When meeting someone, never bring this up mistakenly.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 4: Faith and Understanding. A verse says:</note> Though he worked as a hired hand, he was never truly lowly. He only lost his way because the work of cleaning was not yet done. What a pity—fifty years of separation! But on this day of meeting, they felt an intimacy twice as deep.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Five: The Parable of the Medicinal Herbs. A verse says:</note> The earth and rain have never had two minds; Roots, stems, flowers, fruits all spread far and wide. The four subtle elements are ultimately the same— Don't search for differences in the branches' size.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Six: Prophecy of Enlightenment. In verse.</note>The body is exposed to the golden autumn wind; the tree’s leaves wither. Four men are bound to birth and death, long on the same path. Countless golden fish leap at the Dragon Gate; Do not, in clear waves, only gaze at the shimmering moon’s reflection.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Seven: The Parable of the Phantom City</note> Long ago, in an eon dusted with ages, I took a poison. Even now, I still feel its numbness. Snapping my fingers to return would be too late— yet the deluded ask, "Where is the Western Paradise?" The Western Paradise? That phantom city, that treasure house—whose home is it? Mistaking another land five hundred leagues away, year after year, I toil in vain. But tell me: where are you, right now? Hey! Look beneath your feet. Wrong, wrong.

> <note place="inline">Chapter Eight: The Prophecy for the Five Hundred Disciples. Verse</note> Gathering in flocks to train through hunger and cold, The pearl sewn in their robes is nearly worn through. What a pity—today’s drunken sleepers, When will they meet their kin again, and in what year?

> <note class="inline">Chapter 9: Bestowing Predictions on Those in Training and Beyond Training. A verse says:</note> Whether great or small, all are caught in one net— Even trying to escape like a toad darting upstream, it's useless. Though it coils in the vast ocean's deep cavern, It will still swallow the hook of Lü Wang's line.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 10: The Dharma Master. A verse says:</note> The great earth has always rested on a water wheel; When digging high plateaus, do not shrink from the hard work. Dressing, sitting, lying down—these are ordinary things, Yet you still call the Tathagata someone separate.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 11: The Appearance of the Jeweled Stupa. A verse says:</note> The ancient Buddhas' compassionate deeds are countless, What does it mean that the land transforms three times? Even if you clearly grasp the truth that comes before sound, You can't help but add waves upon already rippling waters.

> <note place="inline">Devadatta: Chapter Twelve. Verse</note> Bodies crushed to dust and bones ground fine Create deep enmity and ties that bind. One shining pearl with brilliant light does glow, Yet trouble brews again in southern regions below.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 13: The Sutra of Perseverance. Verse:</note> This land and other lands are vast as rolling waves— The helmsman’s spirit stands apart through years of toil. When the great turtle takes the bait upon the hook, Even near the shore, it fears the force of wind.

> <p class="note">Chapter Fourteen: The Practice of Peace and Joy. Verses say:</p> The miraculous elixir that protects life is but a single pill, One who has endured a hundred battles, the northern wind biting cold. A bright pearl, once carried tied in the hair, is now received from yourself, In the light of an illusory net, a dream not yet broken. Is there anyone still dreaming right now? What a pity that within the land of Great Tang, all are wide awake but lost.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 15: Emerging from the Earth. A verse says:</note> Those skilled in the white-clad thief's disguise leave no trace—one technique wears two blades. Do not mock the son who's aged while the father seems too young; who can count how many times they've entered a horse's womb or a donkey's belly?

> <note place="inline">Chapter Sixteen: The Lifespan of the Tathagata. Verse</note> Do not say this matter has no beginning or end, For it has troubled him to count eons of dust. Good medicine is given so the children drink— When the sickness is cured, you first see the spring before the eon.

> A boundless space—who can measure its extent? A roc's flight recalls the journey of ninety thousand miles. Last night, my eyebrows suddenly felt a sharp hunger, And by mistake, I boiled the entire Flower Treasury in a pot.

> <note>Chapter 18: On Rejoicing in Merits. A verse says:</note> Mani pearls rain wealth in endless streams, Half a lifetime's hunger vanishes tonight. Don't wonder why so many dream by city walls— Few have ever smelled the soul-reviving incense.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 19: The Merits of the Dharma Master. A verse says:</note> The true person without rank cannot be confined by any state; Yet bringing forth radiant light and shaking the earth only gives rise to worry. Words of transcendence and silent meditation are but idle furnishings— Where is the sound of the tide that is not the flowing of the ocean?

> <note place="inline">Chapter 20: The Bodhisattva Never Disparaging. Verse says:</note> Pouring foul water on others is a grave offense; Suddenly, corpses litter the level ground. The only pity is for those not yet in Avīci— Today, their ghostly eyes remain open still.

> <note place="inline">The Chapter on the Buddha’s Supernatural Powers, Verse</note> Why disturb heaven and earth? What’s the point? That which originally exists has no completion or loss. Recognize the pointing finger and the tongue’s display— Don’t trick a child with yellow leaves.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 22: Entrustment and Transmission. A verse says:</note> When old, affection clings to children and grandchildren; How few can rise above household concerns? Cherish the sacred command from Vulture Peak, And with bone-deep gratitude, repay this grace.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 23: The Previous Life of the Medicine King Bodhisattva. In Praise</note> Offering one's body and limbs is the highest form of giving— How could the wondrous Dharma ever be hindered by hard practice? Alas, shallow imitators ruin true teachers' example, Like stopping eating entirely for fear of choking—this has become a trend. Wise ones, don't act impulsively: The King of Sutras is kept in the seamless tower, Where countless paths all converge into one.

> <note place="inline">The Universal Gate of Guanyin Bodhisattva, Chapter 25. In verse:</note> Once the perfect penetration is realized, The sage and the ordinary become one family. Like the wishing jewel or divine drum— Before granting joy, suffering must first be removed. Crying out "Guanyin" with every voice, But when will you recognize the true Master? Recognizing the Master is not difficult— Just turn back at the road's end. Once you step into the city of fearlessness, There's no need to ask any further questions.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 26: The Dharani Chapter. A verse says:</note> Drizzling mist shrouds the ancient village cross, As late night silhouettes seem human ghosts. When the Taoist master's talisman is cast, In an instant, the mulberry trees are bathed in the vast sea.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 27: The Story of King Wonderful Adornment. Verse</note> Disaster from a private door is truly lamentable, Losing home and country is not yet called calamity. Recalling once the days within the mountains, Shame kills the former face full of ash.

> <note place="inline">Chapter 28: Universal Worthy Bodhisattva's Exhortation. Verses say:</note> Last night, thunder shook the great ocean, Instantly, raindrops fell like cart axles. In moments, they flooded the Palace of Brahma, A few drops in vain caught Maheshvara's eye. The Four Dharmas, taught anew, passed down through ages, In every dust mote and realm, lamps pass their light from one to the next.
