> In Praise of Master Gaofeng with Six Questions and Six Gāthās <note place="inline">with a short preface</note>

> Master Gaofeng practiced the discipline of an ascetic, striving vigorously to revive the declining Way of the patriarchs. Whenever someone came to him for study, he would first require them to burn their fingers as a token of sincere commitment, and only then would he transmit the essential teachings. His determination to halt the prevailing decadence was truly profound. Observing his recorded dialogues today, every word is like a remedy tailored to the illness, probing precisely where it hurts. In recent times, many Chan adepts have mistakenly treated these teachings as mere superficial matters, thus greatly betraying the intent of the patriarchs. Though I lack insight and wisdom, I respectfully offer my responses. I also attach a verse—whether it be nectar or poison, poison or nectar, I leave it to those with discerning tongues to judge for themselves.

> <note place="inline">Question: A person who is fully enlightened has already transcended life and death. So why is the root of their life-force still intact?</note>

> Response: There is still one who has gone to the very end.

> The verse says:

> When reason is exhausted and feelings fade, retreat is difficult; A single turn of phrase becomes entangled in vines. The stone man claps his hands, singing to the bright moon— I tell you, seekers of Zen, do not look at this lightly.

> <note place="inline">Question: The Buddha's teachings are all the same principle. So why are some people enlightened to it while others are not?</note>

> Answer: It is One.

> The verse says:

> Mountains of every shape and height tower high; A woodcutter, don't ask which is low or high! Seen from the side, a peak; from afar, a range— It's only because you're standing in the mountain.

> <note place="inline">Question: If a great cultivator should follow the Buddha's way, why do they not keep the monastic rules (Vinaya)?</note>

> The Buddha replied: "False teachings are difficult to sustain."

> The verse says:

> Liberation twisted into a tangled vine of thorns, in the dark you touch a jewel, blindly harming yourself. Since the day you were thrust into Upali's chamber, from the Brahma Net, light flows—spring beyond the kalpas.

> <note place="inline">Question: The bright sun shines in the sky, illuminating everything without exception. So why is it hidden by a single cloud?</note>

> Reply of the sage: A glance.

> The verse says:

> Seeing arises from light, yet is deceived by darkness— The clear sky is never hindered by drifting clouds. If you try to distinguish host from guest through light and shade, Why would you need the mighty wind to blow?

> <note place="inline">Question: Everyone has a shadow that follows them everywhere, never leaving their side—so why can't they step on it?</note>

> Answer: If you step on it, it is not a shadow.

> The verse says:

> Those who mistake a reflection for the true form are most pitiable, Unable to let go of past and future, anxious and unstable. But when in the evening the frantic mind finally settles, The young seeker's journey finds its true completion.

> <note place="inline">Question: The entire world is a blazing pit of fire. What level of meditation must one attain in order not to be burned by it?</note>

> A response in a state of radiant stillness.

> The Samadhi Blaze emits the purest fragrance; Do not seek an illusory city from others. After the winter solstice, the Dharmakaya is fully cooked; The yellow bell sounds again as the yang energy is born.
