### 頌荅如母問二首

> Two Poems in Reply to a Mother's Inquiry

問：人問祖師：「百年後甚麼處去？」祖云：「檀越家作水牯牛去。」「學人隨來得麼？」云：「須銜一莖草來。」水牯牛即不問，如何是一莖草？

> <note place="inline">Question: Someone asked the Ancestor, "Where will you go after a hundred years?" The Ancestor replied, "I will go to a benefactor's home as a water buffalo." The student asked, "Can I follow you?" The Ancestor replied, "You must bring a blade of grass." So, putting aside the water buffalo for now, what exactly is this "blade of grass"?</note>

荅：即是自己喫的。

> Answer: It is to be consumed by oneself.

頌曰：

> The verse says:

生死路茫茫，輪迴正未央。須銜一莖草，切勿借他糧。

> The path of birth and death stretches vast and unclear, The cycle of rebirth continues without end. You must hold onto a single blade of grass yourself— Never rely on borrowing sustenance from others.

問：溈山遇寒、拾，拾虎吼三聲。又拈杖云：「喚者箇作甚麼？」意旨如何？

> <note place="inline">Question: Guishan met Han and Shi. Shi roared three times like a tiger. Then holding up his staff and said, "What do you call this?" What is the meaning of this?</note>

荅：忘卻了也。

> Answer: It has been forgotten.

頌曰：

兩度拈來一總忘，何須平地別商量。同條生不同條死，愁聽寒鴉度夕陽。

> Twice picked up, then utterly forgotten— Why seek distinctions on level ground? Same branch in life, but not same branch in death, Sadly, the cold crow crosses the setting sun.
