> Twenty-Four Hymns in Praise of Guanyin

> A single drop from the water vessel—vast and deep beyond measure. Sprinkle it across the entire universe—not a loss, not a surplus. If the realm of beings were empty, this practice would turn full circle.

> White is the paper, black is the ink. Where is the Purple Bamboo Grove? What is Pan Tuo Rock? Rare Great Being, with effortless and wondrous virtue—you do not manifest your reflection in the void, but choose instead to channel your presence through brush and ink. When the ocean of consciousness is calm, the moon's reflection appears cool; the meditation cushion’s leaves are emerald, and moss marks shine azure. The Persian merchant from the South Sea arrives on the shore; his priceless pearl holds the worth of a realm of fine dust.

> <note place="inline">Avalokiteshvara and Sudhana in Blood Calligraphy</note> At ease in all directions, the Lotus Sutra shines brilliantly. Master and disciple follow closely, reaching the far shore of emptiness. If you wish to know their true identity: they are both men of flesh and blood, driven by passionate conviction.

> Taking grass as his seat, called "auspicious," His meditative and enlightened virtue is the precepts he keeps. Each action is the Buddha's practice, His way like an elephant mindful of its leader. Manifesting universally, he is the king of monks.

> Sitting in meditation on a firm rock, Nothing to attain, nothing to speak. Two scrolls of the Wonderful Dharma, Like a single snowflake in a red-hot furnace. Hands and feet are clearly distinct, Yet their functions are utterly different. Try to deliberate or ponder it— You'll mistake a turtle for a duck.

> The meditation cushion sits in silence, Cloud-like robes drift gracefully. The Great Compassion Dharma Gate Uses sickness as medicine. It is the key to the teachings, A bridge across the river of Zen. Consult the youth Sudhana, Whose southern pilgrimage path lies open.

> The Buddha's truth is not vast in words, yet thought keeps it constantly swirling. Speak of it, and you cannot fully capture it; practice it, and you cannot fully reach it. With furrowed brows and glaring eyes, facing strength, you must be fierce. A single stick of sacred incense forever sweeps away the armies of delusion.

> A lotus of treasure emerges from the absolute void, The moon-face rises from the ocean of true nature. Treading through waves, all is but water— No need to cross to a far shore, to claim the first step.

> Amidst the thousand-zhang waves, the divine power is one. Playfully roaming with ease, what bondage binds? Treading through the myriad clouds over Sumeru, all beings who behold this are granted their wishes.

> Sitting in meditation, how does it compare to rising from it? Pure, still nectar soaking the willow branch. In all worlds, no place left for worry to remain, Only an empty fist, teasing a child.

> A single Mani pearl, its light illumines the entire Dharma realm. Roll it up or spread it out, it follows your mind, free and at ease. Leaning on a perilous cliff, forgetting all form and clinging. The sweet dew on a willow branch subtly brings all together. Call it a Zen trick—a grasping of nothing. Only a child may follow it; the parrot remains beyond the clouds.

> Majestically sits alone atop the Great Hero Peak, Saving all beings without claiming any merit. Painting the colors of the empty sky a thousand shades, Yet faintness obscures the purple-golden face.

> <note place="inline">Image of Great Compassion</note>I bow to the Great Compassionate One, the Awakened One at ease, With perfect, unobstructed Dharani power. His kindness and fierce guidance are beyond thought— Adorned with stillness and wisdom, unequaled. In a single instant of awakening, a thousand truths arise; His entire body and every hand and eye shine clearly. His skillful means and wisdom come without effort, And so it is in every thought. Each thought manifests, neither increasing nor decreasing, And the nature of reality in every speck of dust is the same. Thus, on a small piece of paper or a single brushstroke, The complete form of Great Compassion appears. Whoever beholds this compassionate face Will awaken directly to the true body and its wondrous marks. This is the power of the Universal Gateway’s manifestation— Do not see it merely as ink and paper.

> Achieving the supreme perfect realization, Manifesting in thirty-two responsive forms. With fourteen powers that grant fearlessness, Healing all beings' afflictions everywhere. In countless realms, he manifests countless bodies; Every paper and ink-stroke embodies true nature. Before your very eyes, it's utterly clear; Radiance shines like the ocean seal of Samadhi. If you still ask, "Who is this Great Being?" You're just grasping at the handle of an alms bowl again.

> A foreign monk with green-blue eyes and long eyebrows, an elongated skull and square cheeks, wearing leather sandals and carrying a straw mat, a kundika water flask and secret scriptures. Alongside those arhats, he demonstrates the same practice—this is a great bhikshu, pure and exceptionally noble.

> Pine trees like dragons, layered cliffs like houses. Seated on a lotus pedestal, willow branch tender green. Skillfully responding to all situations, like an echo answering from a valley. Eye’s form, ear’s sound—neither one nor six. Don’t mistake the ancient Guanyin— A worldly person with hair, a monk with a bald head.

> The Bodhisattva's compassion is genuine, while living beings' sickness is merely illusory. In the burning ground of afflictions, the willow branch sprinkles everywhere \[with cool dew\]. The body becomes entirely cool and refreshed, yet no one knows who is doing this. This is exactly the bloodline that is without duality, without division, without distinction, and without interruption—so why bother with divination and superstition? Ah! Though the Buddha's teaching is wondrous, clinging to it makes it coarse. Though dragons and ghosts are mundane, revealing them makes them elegant. If you insist that Guanyin must possess a beautiful form, you would make the old village woman laugh herself to death.

> The nature of hearing is pure and clear— Why cling to sweeping away sounds and words? Holding a sutra, Guanyin gazes upon all beings, Freely bestowing the precious gem of wisdom. The wise perceive the root and source; The ignorant chase and circle around. The youth carries a fish basket— Only because golden-scale fish are few. Two tails for just one coin— Who truly understands this worth?

> A single lotus-leaf boat, drifting alone and gracefully, Traverses the entire world of dust, yet never leaves a needle’s point. It is clearly seen in daily, ordinary life, Yet transcends a thousand wonders and ten thousand marvels. If you recognize the single thread of truth within, Then this is called the One Who Observes Freely. This is the complete essence and great function Of the thirty-two responses, The fourteen fearlessnesses, And the four ineffable, non-striving wondrous virtues. It is offered to you entirely, laid out plainly, Not permitting discussion or conceptual thought, Only calling for reverent, diligent worship.

> All day long you count your beads, Each recitation calling on Guanyin. You constantly open the gate of great function, And the future will never change this. If sentient beings are willing to reflect on themselves, Why trouble the Buddhas to put on armor? Only because your direct faith is not genuine, You sit beside a meal and still starve.

> Living beings are lost in their original hearing, Chasing sounds, drifting in the flow of existence. Yet even as they drift, the faculty of hearing is never far. When the Great Being turns inward and sees, They realize the nature is inherently good. Perfect penetration returns to true constancy, And everywhere they look, they see enlightenment. Responding to all sounds in the ten directions, When the conditions are ripe, they can perceive. In silent stillness sitting on the crag, They fiercely rescue beings from all defilements. It is not the Great Being's own power, Nor is it the power of mind or thought. Both are inconceivable, And thus there is never any error. Self-nature has no self-nature, Emotions and consciousness are not emotions and consciousness. See through the barrier of truth and falsity, And then you will know the virtue of the Dharma realm. With my empty, false thoughts, I enter the land of quiescence. Like firewood cast into a blaze, Like ice meeting boiling water. Ignorance and the immovable wisdom — Though two names, they are one reality.

> Holding the prayer beads, we link to the nine realms of existence. When the hands come together above and below, a debt of compassion is born. If you wish to comprehend perfect penetration, simply practice devotion diligently. Think of that which is thought and remembered—the most inconceivable wonder.

> The resplendent wheel of your inherent nature, radiant and complete— Vastly towering, it reveals the violet-golden form. Distinct in color and shape, yet free from all emotional labels— Why seek the truth beyond all things again?

> With leaves for a meditation cushion and cloth for clothing, In silence, sitting cross-legged, awaiting those who are ready. When the realm of beings is exhausted, compassion remains endless— Even Guanyin herself, without such practice, could not truly know.
