The Continued Biographies of Bhikṣuṇīs, compiled by the Venerable Master Zhenhua during the Republican period of China, is an important biographical work in Chinese Buddhist history specifically dedicated to recording the deeds of bhikṣuṇīs. Composed in the first half of the twentieth century, it carries on the tradition of Baochang's *Biographies of Bhikṣuṇīs* from the Liang Dynasty, systematically collecting biographies of eminent bhikṣuṇīs from the Northern and Southern Dynasties through the Republican era. Its contents meticulously document their cultivation experiences, Dharma propagation activities, and contributions to Buddhism, filling a gap in Buddhist historical records concerning female practitioners. This work is not only a crucial text for studying the history of Chinese bhikṣuṇīs and the status of women in Buddhism, but also serves as significant historical material for understanding the development of modern Chinese Mahayana Buddhism, holding immense academic and religious value.

一、梁湖州法華寺尼道蹟傳

Biography of Daoji, Nun of Fahua Temple in Huzhou, Liang Dynasty

Daoyi, also known as Minglian, styled Zongchi, was from Wuxing. Some records say she was the daughter of Emperor Wu of Liang. She became a disciple of Bodhidharma and grasped the essential teachings of the mind. When Bodhidharma was about to return to India, he asked each of his disciples to express their understanding. Daoyi said, "My understanding now is like Ananda seeing the land of Akshobhya Buddha—once seen, it is never seen again." Bodhidharma said, "You have attained my flesh." Later, she secluded herself on Mount Bianling in Huzhou, reciting the Lotus Sutra day and night. After completing ten thousand recitations, she remained on the mountain without descending for twenty years. It is said that white sparrows from the sky often came to listen to her recitation, and the mountain was thus named White Sparrow Mountain. After her passing, her intact body was enshrined in a stupa at the place where she had built her hut. In the first year of the Datong era, a blue lotus flower suddenly appeared inside the stupa, astonishing both monastics and laypeople. When they opened the stupa to investigate, they saw the flower growing from her tongue root. The local authorities recorded the event and reported it to the court. An imperial decree was issued to build the Lotus Sutra Temple. The details are recorded in the stupa inscription written by Chu Xunwang.
