### 三六、五代永明石佛寺尼昌志傳

> 36\. Biography of Nun Changzhi of the Stone Buddha Temple in the Five Dynasties Period

昌志，永明石梘村人，姓周氏。五代間，河南馬氏稱制，娶為妃。及馬氏歿，辭歸削髮，入山修道。因石為佛，因石為堂，苦行清修，至老不倦，村人信服。踰百歲乃涅槃，人因稱其山曰師姑巖，庵曰石佛寺。至明嘉靖年間，耕種者就此山挖得銅鐃法器，并金銀釵釧，相傳為周尼師遺物。

> Changzhi, originally from Shijian Village in Yongming, was born into the Zhou family. During the Five Dynasties period, when the Ma family of Henan established their rule, she was taken as a consort. After Ma's death, she renounced worldly life, shaved her head, and retreated into the mountains to cultivate the Way. She carved a Buddha from stone and built a hall from stone, practicing asceticism and pure cultivation tirelessly until old age, earning the trust and respect of the villagers. She passed into Nirvana at over a hundred years old, and people thereafter named the mountain "Shigu Yan" (Nun's Cliff) and the temple "Shifo Si" (Stone Buddha Temple). During the Ming Dynasty's Jiajing era, farmers digging in this mountain unearthed bronze cymbals, ritual instruments, as well as gold and silver hairpins and bracelets, said to be the relics left behind by the nun Zhou.
