> Thirty-Eight. Biography of Nun Qingyu of Chongzhen Zisheng Temple in the Eastern Capital of the Song Dynasty

> Qingyu, the seventh daughter of Emperor Taizong, held the title of Grand Princess of Shen State. Throughout her life, she abstained from eating meat. In the early years of the Duangong era, when the emperor visited Yansheng Temple, she expressed her wish before the Buddha to renounce worldly life and become a nun. Upon Emperor Zhenzong's ascension to the throne, she requested to shave her head and take vows. The emperor said, "All my sisters have been generously granted estates and mansions, and have married into noble families, in fulfillment of our late father's affection. Yet you alone wish to leave the secular world. Is this truly acceptable?" Qingyu replied, "This was the wish of our late father." She persisted in her request, and it was eventually granted. She was granted the title of Princess of Wu State, given the name Qingyu, and bestowed the monastic title "Master of Compassionate Enlightenment." An imperial decree ordered the construction of Chongzhen Zisheng Temple in the western part of the capital for her residence. The ceremonial protocols of the Buddhist community and the music division of the imperial court were arranged to escort her. At that time, relatives of the imperial family and ladies of the inner court who wished to leave the secular world—such as the Princess of Wannian County, daughter of Prince Migongyi, and the Princess of Hui'an County, daughter of Prince Tanggonghui—over thirty individuals in total, all followed her in taking monastic vows. An imperial decree was issued that day to ordain ten young novices across the empire for every one person ordained. Having fulfilled her aspiration, she devoted herself to rigorous practice and spiritual progress. She wrote down essential teachings from Buddhist scriptures and posted them all around her seat as reminders and encouragement. She treated others with humility and courtesy, never acting as though her noble status set her apart. Whenever she spoke, her words were sincere and earnest, urging all to cultivate the path. Her worldly life lasted thirty-eight years, and her life as a nun sixteen summers before she passed into nirvana.
