### 一五七、清金陵慈恩庵尼慧照傳

> Biography of Nun Huizhao of Ci'en Convent, Jinling

慧照，壽春陳氏女，梁學文室，奉翁姑甚孝。初姑有病，慧照焚香誓神，割股和藥煎湯以進，姑病遂愈。尋孀居，日工紡織，其長子有宿根，求出家，許之。依師勝音祝髮，名悟成，字方聚，後成大善知識，住金陵封崇。乃迎慧照至慈恩庵，奉養無缺。既得浩清律師開示，隨生歡喜，發心出家，稟受大戒。晝夜念佛，無得間斷，至睡夢中猶出聲念佛，庵眾皆歎服，敬之如神。時方聚遷主揚州高旻，慧照獨居慈恩甚安。倏越五載，方遙依封崇安居，七日作法。前兩日，在封崇作法，晏然無恙；忽然第三日，西向念佛坐逝。世壽六十有九，乃嘉慶十三年也。方聚遵遺命荼毗，送靈骨歸江，留衣鉢分建二塔：一建於金陵鳳臺門外皇姑庵後山，一建於維揚朴蜀鎮南。

> Huizhao was a woman from the Chen family in Shouchun, married to Liang Xuewen, and she served her parents-in-law with great filial piety. When her mother-in-law first fell ill, Huizhao burned incense and made vows to the spirits, then cut flesh from her thigh to mix with medicine and boiled it into a broth to give her. Her mother-in-law recovered. Not long after, she became a widow and spent her days spinning and weaving. Her eldest son had deep karmic roots from a past life and asked to become a monk, which she permitted. He studied under Master Shengyin, who shaved his head and gave him the monastic name Wucheng, with the courtesy name Fangju. He later became a great teacher of the Dharma and resided at Fengchong Temple in Jinling. He then welcomed Huizhao to Ci'en Nunnery, caring for her without any lack. After receiving teachings from the precept master Haoqing, she was filled with joy and resolved to become a nun herself, receiving the full precepts. She chanted the Buddha's name day and night without interruption, and even in her sleep she would still chant aloud. The nuns at the nunnery all admired her deeply and respected her like a deity. At that time, Fangju was transferred to be the abbot of Gaomin Temple in Yangzhou, and Huizhao lived peacefully alone at Ci'en Nunnery. Suddenly five years passed, and Fangju, from afar, arranged a seven-day Dharma retreat at Fengchong Temple. For the first two days of the retreat at Fengchong, she was serene and free from illness. Suddenly, on the third day, while sitting facing west and chanting the Buddha's name, she passed away peacefully. She was sixty-nine years old, in the thirteenth year of the Jiaqing reign. Following her final instructions, Fangju cremated her body and sent her relics back to the river region, keeping her robes and bowl to build two stupas: one behind the Huanggu Nunnery on Phoenix Terrace outside the city gate of Jinling, and the other south of Puyi Town in Weiyang.
