> Preface to the Recorded Sayings

> The study of Chan is profound, but the ultimate vehicle—the highest level—transcends the three realms entirely. Its teachings, with clear guidance and discernment, judge both humans and celestial beings; the right moments and conditions for awakening are precise and never missed. Master Mutang opened the Dharma hall at Qingyun Temple, attracting many disciples. Later, he compiled his recorded sayings and showed them to me. As I read through them, I sighed deeply, reflecting that the Buddhadharma is declining day by day. People's minds are no longer pure, and good karmic conditions grow ever weaker. It is like people today who long for the capital but cannot find the path; they will never reach it. While they ask for directions from those who have been there, if they meet a guide who hasn't actually traveled the path themselves, their arrival becomes even more hopeless. So, the decline of the Dharma is partly due to practitioners' faults, but not entirely theirs alone. The Master stands like a pillar against the turbulent tide, shouldering this noble path. He strikes the great bell when dragons and elephants cry in lament, sounding the Kalaviṅka voice when fish and dragons are in chaos. With utmost effort for others and an earnest, compassionate heart, he teaches. Know that this matter is inherently perfect and complete—it cannot be obtained from others. It is a realm beyond life and death, a secret even ghosts and spirits cannot penetrate. It cleaves the primeval chaos, shatters the dark lacquer bucket, revolves through three to five cycles of heaven, with the Big Dipper commanding the seasons. The primordial move strikes like an arrow, startling everyone; the nine-layered iron drum naturally melts like ice, revealing the sun alone, shining through ages, pulverizing emptiness, and manifesting the whole body in full presence. I myself am of dull roots and entangled in worldly nets, yet since childhood I have admired the Chan tradition and encountered extraordinary karmic opportunities. I recall in the year Xinsi, I unexpectedly met the Elder Luming again at Haifu Chan Temple. Over tea, we discussed matters deeply, and I received his approval. When he later visited, the Master was also present. Their teachings were penetrating and direct. Elder Luming, a true heir of the Huangmei lineage, was the Master's own Dharma teacher. The Elder passed away twenty years ago. Fortunately, I now have the Master, who has given me much instruction. It's like drinking water—only one knows its temperature. The ambrosia of anointing cannot be forgotten. Yet I grieve that sentient beings fail to understand the great matter, revolving in the cycles of karma, entangled in karmic conditions, unable to perfect the three bodies. How can they hope to cultivate the four wisdoms? They do not realize that the jewel has always been in their own clothing, and that the lamp is inherently fire. Now, reading these recorded sayings, I feel a distant longing. I believe they benefit disciples only slightly, but in today's age, their contribution to this path is immense. I humbly add these words at the beginning, as if attending a Dharma assembly. I do not fear the accusation of being a flatterer of the Buddha. I also hope all mountains will fully uphold this teaching. Let the Master see that the other has no wounds, and be careful not to harm them.
