### 機緣

> Opportunities and Conditions

問：「世尊初生便道：『唯我獨尊。』和尚生時道個甚麼？」師云：「再哭哭不住。」僧喝，師云：「亂叫喚作麼？」

> Question: "When the World-Honored One was born, he said, 'I alone am the honored one.' What does the Venerable say when born?" The Master said: "Again and again he cries without stopping." The monk shouted. The Master said: "What's all this random shouting for?"

問：「如何是福善境？」師云：「河小船多。」曰：「如何是境中人？」師云：「身短面黑。」僧喝，師打云：「不曾虧著你。」

> Question: "What is the realm of good fortune and virtue?" The master said: "When the river is small, there are many boats." Question: "What is the person within that realm?" The master said: "Short in stature, with a dark face." The monk shouted, and the master struck him, saying: "I have not treated you badly."

問：「不思善，不思惡，如何是本來面目？」師曰：「思思相繼，是什麼面目？」僧曰：「學人不會。」師曰：「用會作麼？」

> A monk asked, "Without thinking of good, without thinking of evil, what is one's original nature?" The Master replied, "If thoughts keep following one after another, what nature is that?" The monk said, "I don't understand." The Master said, "What use is understanding?"

師入堂，以竹篦擲地，云：「是甚麼？」眾無語。師云：「喚著則觸，不喚著則背。」眾又無語。師云：「誰知山僧被者夥漢勘破？」

> The master entered the hall, threw his bamboo stick to the ground, and said, "What is this?" The assembly was silent. The master said, "If you call it by a name, you grasp at it. If you don't call it by a name, you turn away from it." The assembly was still silent. The master said, "Who would have guessed that I, a mountain monk, have been seen through by this bunch?"

僧呈頌，師便問：「如何是九九還歸八十一？」僧云：「若不入水，爭見長人？」師曰：「失卻七置之不問，拈得一意又若何？」僧便喝，師曰：「拈得一，失卻七也」。

> The monk presented a verse. The Master asked, "What about 'ninety-nine returns to eighty-one'?" The monk replied, "If you don't enter the water, how can you see the tall man?" The Master said, "Let's set aside the loss of the seven. What about grasping one meaning?" The monk then shouted. The Master said, "You've grasped one, but lost the seven."

師赴齋次，見一居士家供三教聖人圖，乃問：「三大老終日商量甚事？」院主云：「誠難啟口。」師曰：「承虛接響作麼？」院曰：「明破即不堪。」師打一摑，云：「莫累別人。」

師在園中刈艸，一居士在籬外畫一圓相，師曰：「是則是，猶隔籬在。」士便冒雨而去，師曰：「是則是，猶涉程途在。」

問：「去年鷺鷥吞卻鴨，今年銀碗裏盛雪。迦文老子睹明星，更見個甚麼奇特？」聲未絕，師便打。
