> Deep valley, dark and winding, Tall woods, branches intertwined. How fine this newly built hall stands, Met as autumn's first breeze expands. I came just after rain had passed, All things greeted me, joy amassed. Young bamboo, charming to the eye, Frosted joints already fill the cart—why, They've grown so thick and strong thereby. Old locust trees, a restless crew, Wind-blown blossoms silt the channel through. Mountain crows call out in loud dispute, The cicada alone keeps silent, absolute. I rest my mind beyond this toilsome sphere, A line of verse comes in a dream, half-clear. Past and present are the same, you see— Why should years be chronicled by me?
