> Dust obscures the western wind, grass and trees receive the morning sun. A bamboo sedan chair passes beyond the city gate—I never tire of hurried comings and goings. The servant boy lags, too lazy to advance, and again I must scold and urge him on. The monk walked ahead of me, yet by the time I arrive, he is already seated calmly in his room. He earnestly urges me to stay, saying we'll share a midday meal knee to knee. Furnace smoke brightens the paper window, birdsong hides among dense leaves. Then I climb up to Pingshan Hall, where the evening scene grows even more desolate. The clear river stretches vast to the horizon—exquisite verses cannot be begged for. All my life I've cherished thoughts of springs and rocks, yet surely there have been losses along the way. How could I follow the children in their ways, where nine of ten matters prove untrue? Wasn't this outing a delight? This old man is certainly frank and open. Still, I will follow Manjushri, and go once to inquire of Vimalakirti.
